Growing up a parent started as a state trooper, then was a police officer in our town, serving as a patrolman, then a detective and ultimately captain. Through them I also knew every other cop in town.
Two uncles by marriage were officers in other towns (one of which had a brother who was also a policeman in their town and brother-in-law who was a court officer).
Later on a sibling was an officer, as was one of my friends, while another friend was an FBI agent. All of the above are retired or deceased.
Currently the grandchild of one of those previously mentioned uncles is a state trooper in a neighboring state, and I know several of the current officers in my town due to a part-time job. But overall I feel less involved with law enforcement personnel than I did in earlier years.
