I like them but won’t be having one this year. It’s not a Fat Tuesday tradition for us… and doing grocery pickup instead of shopping myself has severely cut down on the number of impulse purchases like this that I might make

Never heard them called Paczki, just a jelly filled donut here. No, not eating one today, but I am going to a Luna New Year lunch today.

I've never had one so I have to ask. Looking at the picture, it looks very similar to a jelly donut that I did have many times in my youth. Are they the same or similar?

The dough is different. It’s heavier and not as sweet (more like a bread). They also have a bit of alcohol in the dough, typically vodka. The fillings tend to be very rich, and the glaze and/or powdered sugar on the heavy side. If you try a genuine Paczki you will notice the difference .

We are choosy though. Custard filled, no frosting, dusted with powdered sugar please and thank you.

A good quality paczki is different from a jelly doughnut, mostly in the dough. A paczki should be more like a brioche dough versus a doughnut, which is usually a raised wheat pastry.

That being said, most places you'll find paczki (e.g. grocery stores), they'll pretty much be jelly (or creme/custard) filled doughnuts.

No paczki for me today, I'm dieting. That, and lines at the bakeries near me are usually out the door. I'll usually have one during Lent on a cheat day.

Not a thing here, but there are plenty of places to get donuts with some kind of filling. I won't be having any though, I have the other half of a molten chocolate Crumbl cookie waiting for me in the fridge

It's not so much a Fat Tuesday thing in our house as it is a January thing.

We have trouble getting them very far ahead of Mardi Gras. I had to do a special order to get some last week, as they were only getting two boxes in a day and of course, selling them quickly. I would love to be able to eat them throughout January!

Normally someone would bring some into the office and I’d have one as it’s the only day I have them. However everyone is WFH today (we are getting 8-12 inches of snow) so none for me this year!

Our supermarket stocked them this year. I opted for lemon over the custard and cream options. I can’t recall if we’ve had them before, but we weren’t fans. I think we’ll stick to king cake for Mardi Gras and donuts from Shipley's.

I, too, wish we had a good King Cake for today. I looked into having one shipped from Gambino's but the shipping charges were prohibitive. When DH and I were in NOLA visiting my sister/BIL, we picked up a King Cake at the airport to take to Disney with us. Not the best I've ever had, but it made an awesome "breakfast in bed" while we were at Coronado Springs!
