I am very sorry to the OP for this experience and I think there is a mix of things that could be done. I like the idea of numbers or passes handed out. However, I also agree that I don't want to lag behind some people when I could walk past them. I am a fast walker so move quickly but I would never push, shove or hurt anyone.
However, I think nothing will change until someone gets seriously hurt. It's unfortunate, but if someone gets trampled, breaks a leg, or a child get a huge injury, there will be press and potentially inspectors looking at the procedure. It may take a few in fact. I think Star Wars may bring this to a head and I cannot imagine what the Disney attorneys go through every morning wondering if "today's the day."
I'm not entirely sure there is a simple fix for this. I love these boards, but the thing I think people on them sometimes forget is that Disney is a once in a lifetime trip for most people. I know there are a lot of people on these boards who go regularly, or even bemoan that they can only get there every 3-5 years, but that is not the reality for a majority of guests. There are a large number of guests who are there for the first time.
I haven't been in 25 years. We went for 4 days. My parents were teachers and it was made very clear to us that we were not going to be doing this again.
I will have a few days for a conference, but if I have children, it will be a one time thing. I can tell you every person I know who has children under 2 has begun saving to go when the children are 10 and up. They can't justify the expense on something when a child is young.
This can put blinders on posters who assume that people will catch FP, got to EMM or rides the next time around. They talk about just skipping things or getting in line at the end of the night. Families don't want to skip anything. They want to see the fireworks, fantasmic, ROL etc. This is such an expensive endeavor that the family is only going to do this once. They can't spend more on EMM or DAH because they have spent so much already.
Because of that, I think a lot of people want to do everything. SDD is the hot ride. It's hard to get a FP for it. You've spent so much money getting there, getting into the park, staying, food, souvenirs that you WILL ride SDD. When you are paying that much, it does seem fair. But you also need to do A2S, TSMM, ToT, RnR and EVERY OTHER THING in the park. So you will go there at rope drop and try to get on then so you have time for everything else. And maybe you weren't going to run, but everyone else is. And someone just rammed their stroller into you so now you are more aggressive which gets the person next to you worked up and so on and so on.
I'm not saying it's ok, but it is textbook mob mentality. The behavior feeds and builds off one another until things that you would never do at the grocery store(run in front of someone, check a stroller) become ok because everyone else is. I have no idea how you fix that with Disney getting more expensive and selling more things EMM, DAH, viewing areas etc. They are monetizing every single thing and I can well imagine that will start selling FP at some point, throwing things more out of whack.
