I purchased a slide scanner (PrimeFilm 1800U) from Costco a couple of years ago. I haven't quite had the nerve to tackle my dad's pile of slides, but the ones that I have converted look just fine. Keep in mind that the higher priced models will scan faster and at a higher resolution. My scanner takes about a minute per slide and it does not have an autoloader, so you have to insert and remove each slide in individually.
If you just want prints made of your slides, you can take them to a photo store and they will gladly do it for you. For a price.
You might check Wal-Mart's photo department. Ours has a kiosk where you can download your digital photos from practically any media. It also has a flatbed scanner attached. I haven't checked, but it is possible that the kiosk can also scan slides (although I think that I would have remembered seeing that).
Good luck with your project.
