Can you get in and tour the castle? I had heard you could, then not. Think my girls would love it, if so.

If it's true, how do you get in?

Thanks!princess:

No you cannot unfortunately. There used to be a stairwell with diorama type scenes of Sleeping Beauty but it was closed after 9/11. There was a rumor they were going to reopen it but no such luck.

why would they close it in relation to 9/11? I've never been there so I'm just curious why they chose to close that specifically?

Was it a risk to do damage to the castle itself?

I guess because it is a fairly narrow passageway and leads directly through the castle. The entrance to the exhibit started at one side of the castle and exited on the other.

I would think that it was closed because it was such an unsupervised area in the park. Who really knew what was going on in there because, as it has already been mentioned it wasn't that big of an area. There were not CMs inside the castle to keep an eye on things and make sure that no one was going to blow the place up. The castle is the most iconic part of the park, and being that it is the heart of the park (and the first castle built for Disney), not to mention that Disneyland is so heavily traveled with so many people on a day to day basis, I think that they were just trying to protect the people in the park. The dioramas inside were pretty cool, but I have heard that they were moved to a window display somewhere inside the park now. That is all that it really was inside the castle as well, so don't feel like you are missing out too much. I don't think that many people even knew they were there. Every time I went through the castle, there were hardly any other people!

It was closed because it could not be made wheelchair accessible, and thus conform to CA law, not for some "supposed" threat.

I really doubt this. Tarzan's Treehouse is wheelchair inaccessible. Here's a great post I found on the Internet about the closing of the castle walkthrough.

I'll first give a short run down on some of the reasons that Disney wanted to leak out to the public through the cast members:

1) Terrorism / Security
2) ADA
3) Asbestos
4) Costly to Upkeep / Low Attendance

Above are four reasons cast members have given for its closing. Although many have already been addressed, I will debunk each of these. (I've done my research. My life was dedicated to getting the Castle back open for a while there.)

1) Terrorism/Security - The gift shops inside the castle and the areas just beyond the drawbridge are just as easy to plant/hide an explosive device. Disney has wanted to close the attraction down for years (They almost did in the early 1990s, but there was major protest, so they decided to keep it open.) and they used the September 11th attacks as a scapegoat, or rather, one of their scapegoats. Cinderella Castle (in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom) is at greater risk for a terrorist attack, since Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is the world's most visited theme park. It would be much easier to cause damage to Cinderella Castle with its many unattended rooms and its restaurant (compete with restrooms). The difference between Sleeping Beauty Castle and Cinderella Castle is that Cinderella Castle makes a lot of money, whereas Sleeping Beauty Castle does not If Disney cared about the security of its Castles, it would have closed Cinderella Castle at the same time as Sleeping Beauty Castle.

2) Handicap Accessibility - The Castle is grandfathered. It doesn't need to comply with ADA rules. Very few attractions at Disneyland are totally ADA compliant, but most don't need to be because of their ages.

3) Asbestos is a relatively new rumor. As Mr. Weiss stated, Asbestos is not a problem if it is behind the walls or under the floor. Most attractions and buildings at Disneyland would have asbestos because of their age. That's no reason to close a building. Every house, but one, that I have lived in has had asbestos. Every school I attended had asbestos. It's not a problem if you don’t lift up the carpets or bash through the walls and take a big whiff of it.

4) Cost - Disney's most outrageous "leaked" claim yet. The Castle cost virtually nothing to run. It required dusting and minor repair once in a while, but Disney didn’t' even do that, so it virtually cost them nothing except the hourly wage of the cast member that had to unlock the doors and turn on the electricity.

Sadly, Disney's reason number 4 is most likely the reason they closed the attraction, no matter how outrageous the statement. Disney executives never really cared for Sleeping Beauty Castle. They felt that it didn't warrant being in operation because of the attendance numbers. They didn't provide upkeep to the Castle at all for some years. (In 2000, they just boarded up the dragon scene after part of it stopped working.) They let the Castle go into a state of "disrepair". Disney's then-definition of "disrepair" was something that took a lot of time and effort to fix for what they saw as no reason. It was easy enough to clean up the dust and change out some of the lights, but Disney felt it was far too costly to do that in Disney's eyes. That is the reason we no longer have a Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough.
I pretty much agree with everything here.

And here's what Yesterland has to say.
After the terrorist attacks of September 11, guest attendance and revenue at the Disney parks and resorts plummeted. Disney cut theme park and resort operating costs wherever they could. On October 7, 2001, Sleeping Beauty Walk-Through was closed “for refurbishment.”

Over time, Sleeping Beauty Walk-Through dropped off the refurbishment list. The attraction’s sign disappeared from its portal. Disneyland’s guest count and revenue recovered, but the doors to Sleeping Beauty Walk-Through didn’t reopen to guests.

Disneyland never announced the permanent closing or provided an official reason.

Well, I asked the same thing in October. I asked the lady in the Heraldry Shop. She told me it was closed because of the lack of wheelchair accesability.
I personally had been in there around 92' and it was wonderful. It was very pretty.
I wish it was still open. It makes me sad that it isnt. I dont know why they would close that for not being wheel chair capable and have the Tarzan tree house open which isnt wheel chair accesable. Bummer.

Indy is the least accesabe ride at DL, of course I can't speak to the Mountains as I skip those. At Indy you have to take two elevators to get to the ride and two elevators back, to leave the ride. And then after that it was so horrible rough a ride, I would have been better off on a Mountain!!

I was told it was closed because of the Believe Fireworks... some are stored in the castle apparently.

That is what I have heard as well.

But it was closed long before Believe. I know for sure it was open in 98 but closed in 2003. I can't be more specific, but Believe is not that old unless I'm confused. :)

The castle is old enough to be exempt from ADA requirements. Access is not an closure issue- look at the tree house. In 2003 I was told that it was closed immediately after September 11th. While I can't say for certain why they closed it at that precise time it makes sense that the two are related. The castle is a globally recognized symbol of America.

For those who miss it, one of the dioramas is on display on Main Street.

Believe started in 2000. The castle closed in 2001.

Terrorists will not attack a theme park. It's a pointless endeavor. They will attack powerful financial centers, like the World Trade Center. The Sears Tower is a valid target, NOT Disneyland.

The reason the walk-through closed was because of money. Disney was so cheap that they didn't want to pay the paltry sum to keep the thing clean and staff a cast member at the entrance.

I have heard that in Disneyland China there is an AMAZING tour that is very magical.
It is more of a wak through ride.

Disneyland is NOT cheap and did you not hear about all the bomb threats for WDW.
Disneyland is a very big target.

You can also tour the castle at Disneyland Paris (I will be doing so again in 12 days!!) There you can go upstairs, they have wonderful stained glass windows that you can view and other items you can take pictures of. There it tells the story of Sleeping Beauty.

There are many things in the park that are not wheelchair accesible, I think this reasoning has been ruled out before.

I think that it'd be trippy to break in one afternoon, kind of like walking through the West Wing in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

whatever the real reason is, the official reason is security and no exit strategy in the event of an emergency. it's plausible this is a legitimate reason as 9/11 caused everyone to look at things, not necessarily because they were targets, but because security was just brought to the forefront. if someone or something had happened in the space, they just didn't deem it safe.
