I encountered two issues with skycaps and my luggage on my recent trip to the World that I would like to share:
First, when we got to the airport to leave for our trip at Nashville (BNA), we started to go through the outside skycap line to check our luggage. The line was enormous (about 30-40 people). On a lark, I had my wife go inside and check the line at the SW counter. It had THREE people in it. Needless to say, we abandoned the skycap line and went inside the terminal and got checked in in about 5 minutes at the counter. If the skycap line is very long, have a member of your party check the inside lines at teh counter. You may find that the skycap line is longer.
Second, when you return your rental car at MCO, you may very well be approached by a person with a cart who offers to take your luggage to the terminal and advertises himself as a skycap. I guess technically they are, but they do not check your luggage. They only transport your luggage across the street to the skycap stand outside the terminal and hand it over to the actual checkin skycaps. The caveat is that you will be in the position to tip both skycaps so if you do not want to tip twice and you do not have a lot of stuff, you can carry your own luggage across the street to the actual checkin skycaps.
