I agree with you on everything except the "nowadays" part. There have always been people who are cruel to their animals. The good news is, nowadays it's less acceptable, and these people are getting held up to public scorn - which is awesome. Go, You Tube!

Case in point, small town politician Charlie Hazard never faced any kind of legal punishment for mixing glass into ground meat and feeding it to a 13yo Charlie Wilson's dog in 1946. Although this did get Charlie Wilson his first taste of politics, since he then threw himself into a campaign for Hazard's opponent on the platform of "Hazard killed my dog," and got Hazard defeated.
