Sky Cots and Bulk Heads (VA)

Hi there,

We used a skycot with Virgin a few years ago when our daughter was just under 12 months old. It wasn't the best experience I must say as I was fairly heavily pregnant again with daugter number 2 plus 12 months I feel is too old for a skycot!. The bulk head seat that they could attach the skycot to on our plane was a nightmare, as it had LESS legroom that a normal economy seat and of course you don't have the seat in front to put your legs under!!! When it was in place myself, bump and husband were pinned down!!! They won't put you by the emergency exits as you have an infant..I believe...they're the ones with the most leg room.

We may have course just been very unlucky and had an older plane...I'm sure others will come on and tell yo u that they were fine, we all have our different experiences.

I wouldn't worry too much or put too much emphasis on the skycot, you may well find that your baby doesn't find it comfortable anyway and will probably prefer to sleep on you or your partner...unfortunately for you!!! They are terribly small also, only really the width of a seat.

I have flown quite a bit since with both daughters and I have found that a travel sleepingbag that I bought from jojo maman bebe was worth its weight in gold. It had a slit in the middle that you can use for the seatbelt attachment, car seat, or for evenings in the pushchair. That way you don't disturb your baby when transfer them to and from cars, pushchairs, cots etc. It also has removable arms so you can keep them on during a cooler night flight and take them off whilst in Florida. I've used it at home for 2 winters also!!

As for keeping a baby entertained during the flight, I just took a bag full of small toys and those tiny books in a box however I found that she didn't really bother with them and slept for most of the flight.

I always get myself so wound up before a flight, worrying about them crying, getting bored etc but I always find they're so much better than I expect. Also if they have cried on board a flight because they're tired etc, I feel that everyone is looking at us, tutting etc, however I always find that people are very understanding and comment on them being so well behaved during the flight. I guess what seems like an eternity to us mothers when our child is creating in public is in reality a very short time!!

Don't worry, have a wonderful time. We found that such a great holiday at Disney when our daughter was young, she was in awe the entire holiday and didn't cry at all.

We never bought a seat for our dd before age 2 (she has just had her birthday and this will be her first flight in her own seat).

We travelled when she was 3 months old (to Australia) and 8, 18 and 22 months to Florida. Each time she did great (I am sure it helps getting them to travel when they are young as it is normal for them).

By 8 months she was too big for the skycot and I have always had her sleep on my knee but that does get more difficult as they get older, I certainly wouldn't want to do it now!!!

Bulkhead seats are great as you have extra leg room and it is not a problem getting up past the person next to you.

I too am always conscious of her disturbing other people but I always get nice comments from other passengers about how well she travels (which makes me very proud mummy!!).

Keeping a 7 month old entertained is not difficult - the fact that they have your undivided attention for 7 hours usually does the trick without much else.

We flew with BA to Florida when my eldest was 6 months old and 18 months old and had a sky cot both times (not the actual cot but one that is like a bouncy chair that straps on and they sit in) and it was great as you could eat and drink without the fear of them knocking over things or touching. Also more leg room and you can get up and out without a problem. My son slept most of the flight in this.

We have also had our daughter to Florida with BA twice when she was 4 months old and 16 months old and again she was in the same as her big brother. The only problem with our last trip out in March this year was that there was turbulence and we had to take her out of it and sit her on our knee with the lap belt. Unfortunately she was sleeping at the time, so woke up when we lifted her out and that was her awake for the remainder of the flight!.

The other times we have flown with cheaper airlines such as Globespan, Continenental and Airtours who do not do sky cots so was dreading this however their planes were not full and have always managed to get a free spare seat for little one.
