NOTE1: We were not impressed by the quality of the food. It was if someone said, "If were build a restaurant, they will eat." Well, we ate. We didn't truly relish the food, but we spent money, which is what Disney wants. There is a nod to countries and areas which are on the Jungle Cruise
ride, but few instances where one can recognize the food of any specific country due to its spices or preparation.

NOTE2: Our 1st review was done during the SOFT OPENING, so food quality and CM behavior may have changed. Contrary to what many had thought, or hoped, there are no alcohol drinks at Skipper Canteen. At this review, lunch and dinner has the same 1-DDP Table Service menu.

NOTE3: For a new eatery, I had thought the facility design would have more interesting and food more unique. Although quite pleasant, there is little truly unique or fascinating. And, even though the SERVERS continued Jungle Cruise gags, it isn't enough to warrant us going back to the Canteen. SERVER attention and food quality are very spotty.

I went back in February of this year, before they were taking reservations and it was walk up only. I was a table of one and had the Hot and Sour Soup and the Head On Shrimp. I remember liking the bread service that came with the meal and the hot and sour soup. The shrimp dish wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly memorable. I was seated in the library/sea explorers room, which was incredibly comfortable and quiet. I could pull out my book and read. The service was what I expect from Disney, attentive and on time, but nothing above and beyond (which is not what I would have expected). I do wish I had gotten some punny jokes. My bill wasn't too outrageous, though they weren't taking AP or TiW discounts at the time, which was a bit of a disappointment.

I've debated going back and think that I might during my next trip if timings/ADRs work out. There's not a whole lot in MK as far as table service goes that meets my family's tastes. Since they've tweaked the menu over the last 10 months or so and I hope the servers get more into the Jungle Cruise spirit of things, it might be a better bet the second time around.

We had dinner there on 2/19/17 and didn't like it. We love food and enjoy most flavor profiles but only enjoyed 3 of our 4 savory items. I will try to explain what we liked and didn't like but I know taste is a unique experience for everybody.

I enjoyed the pulled meat Arepas appetizer. Well seasoned and flavorful. DH had the S.E.A. Shu Mai and he thought the flavors were not complimentary to the dish. He loves similar flavor profiles and it was not what he expected by the description.

I had the Char Siu Pork. The sauce was flavorful and nicely done but the meat was horrid. It was very fatty and I nearly gagged twice and had to spit out chunks of fat. The sauce covered it so thoroughly that I could not see where it was to cut it out. The meat was also chewy, like it was not quite done. It was cut into medallion shaped chunks. When I asked about the fatty meat, the server said it was pork shoulder and she said it is a fatty cut of meat. For that price, I expected a better cut of meat and I was not able to eat most of it.

DH had Skip's Beefy Baked Pasta. The beef was shredded like pulled pork and the bechamel sauce had a strange flavor profile. It was not an Egyptian profile he was familiar with. The beef was nicely done but it was like a layered Egyptian lasagna so the flavors were in layers.

Our server didn't make any jokes and it was just a regular dining experience. We each had the Kungaloosh dessert. It was very good and my favorite part was the caramel-cashew ice cream. The cake was rich but nothing unusual for a dense cake at a nice restaurant. We could not taste the coffee dust on the top of it but the presentation, flavor profile, and textures were very well done.

We will not be returning because we did not like the food and that is the only restaurant on property that we will not return to based on the food. We have been eating at WDW 2-4 trips per year for over 30 years and have eaten at over 80% of all table service restaurants. We are foodies and didn't like the Jungle Skipper Canteen.

We were VERY excited to try this restaurant! We are adventurous eaters and like all sorts of cuisines. Sad to say that we did not have a good experience at all the first time -- food quality was the real issue (service was fine). We decided to give it another try later in the trip, and didn't like the food that time either. At this point, we don't have plans to return. Such a shame, as we were really looking forward to having a very different option in MK.
