Skipper Canteen (Jungle Cruise themed restaurant) updates and ADR watch

I called again this morning. No new information. The CM I talked to made it sound like they wouldn't be given any information in an attempt to avoid crashing the system. So I do wonder if they're just going to sneak it in at some point without notifying anyone.

I don't think Disney will have any empty tables during mealtimes, at any restaurant in the Magic Kingdom, between Christmas and New Year's, even if this restaurant is open and they didn't let anyone know. Just the foot traffic and the overflow from walk-ups turned away from other restaurants in the park will be more than enough to fill this place. So if they are worried about crashing the system then they can probably just make reservations available starting after New Years without worrying that they won't be full.

That's fine with me, as I'm going in Jan. But I'd like them to go ahead and let everyone from Jan on go ahead and make ADRs. I'd also like to see a schedule for DHS and the Fireworks for Jan.... hard to plan your ADRs when you don't know if they will extend park hours for the Symphony in the Stars, have them at the same time as Fantasmic, or move Fantasmic to an earlier time...

Ok, I'm obviously not keeping up with all the scoop. I'm seeing a couple of DIS abbreviations that I don't know yet. They are RoD and RoL. Can someone clue me in with the who, what & where for those? TIA.

Anxiously awaiting to hear more details about this opening! I'll be there for marathon weekend in January and would love to get in to eat here.

If reservations for 1 restaurant can "crash the system" of a a multi-billion dollar business then they better hire back all those IT people they laid off.

RoL is Rivers of Light, the new water show at AK. Rumored to open in either March or April. :)

No business builds a server structure to handle several thousands of times their normal minute to minute traffic. I'm sure they have a lot of head room to handle big surges at the start of days and such, but everyone who wants to eat at a hyped new restaurant at any point in time during the next 6 months hitting the dining website servers at the exact same second is going to crash the system. Doesn't matter if it is Disney. The smart thing to do is just throw it up randomly. That spreads out the traffic so that at the very least everyone isn't hitting the servers at the exact same second. This is also the reason that "phone only" reservations/sales are sometimes done initially.

Just look at the Star Wars ticket sales. They announced that ticket sales would start immediately following the airing of the trailer on Monday Night Football. Everyone who understands server traffic had a good guess that they were going to soft release them prior to that. Every ticket provider in the country released those tickets WELL before they were supposed to in the hopes that it would spread traffic enough to keep their servers up. It wasn't. Pretty much every ticket provider had their website crash.

By the way - I was hitting refresh repeatedly an hour before the "official" on sale time for Star Wars with the expectation they'd go up early and they did. Even still - the first local IMAX showing at 7PM on Thursday sold out in about a minute. Just before word got out and the server crashed. I got my tickets though!

Nope. >sigh< Back up and no sign.
Yes it's back to normal. We leave Thursday. Oddly, I am getting all the other reservations I've been searching for except for CRT. We booked this trip about 70 days ago with the deluxe dining plan. When I booked the plan the CM told me I probably wouldn't find enough ADRs and I should be open minded to changing the plan. I took that as a challenge and with a little time and organization I am happy with all our ADRs! The only thing that really bothered me was when they changed the park hours in MK to an opening time of 7:00am for the entire week we are there. My early breakfast reservations for before park opening time were useless! I'll keep watching for Skipper Cantine with all of you!

Ahhh. Thanks. Do we think that will be a FP event? I would love to do that on our June trip!!

In no way comparable. A few thousand restaurant commandos making ressies should not crash the website at a business that has dozens of restaurants and thousands of hotel rooms. 10 million Star Wars fans trying to buy tickets at the same time at a dealer who sees maybe a few thousands requests at any one time is a different animal.

Usually, the fireworks at DHS are between 2 showings of F!. I don't know exactly what they do if there is only 1 F!. However, the dessert party times are known, so the fireworks times can be extrapolated from that. Look at the following link for what is probably the correct times.

I wonder how folks visiting during the holiday would feel about that. I think they'd be really upset, while the people who get to eat at the restaurant, in December or January, probably will all be happy to have the experience. Who knows what they're going to do but if it were me making the decision, I'd wait until January to open ADRs.

Didn't I read something about this place only being counter service? Or did I misread?
