Does anyone here have jobs that operate under the Six Sigma doctrine?

DH works has worked in several automotive supplier facilities and has some training in Six Sigma. Me....I just smile and nod when he talks about stuff like that!! Goes right over my head (too many acronyms I guess), All I know is in some way it sounds like karate (Six Sigma "black belt")

Yes.

Although it seems to have faded over the last couple of years. I took green belt training and passed the test, but they never put me on a project and the two years have passed.

One of the railroads we use was using this in a project that involved our product a couple of years ago. We were seeing results but the PTB within the railroad changed and pulled it.

Can you explain the Six Sigma doctrine? Sorry I am new.

I've only heard about Six Sigma. Never actually worked with/under/according to it.

To my understanding, it means something like: everything must be operating correctly 99.9999% of the time.

WOW - you really are looking for a fight today aren't you :)

I work in Biotech and right now Six Sigma is the flavor of the day for solving all of the problems with biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing.

I see it as a tool for solving problems but not as a solution in and of itself. I think too often a Six Sigma approach is used in place of good old fashion thinking and common sense.

Another reason not to like it is that MBAs think it is great.

not sure if you were referring to my link or not....I wasn't trying to start a debate, just offering up a site that would give those who inquired more information about the methodology

I worked for a company (division of GE) that used six-sigma. I was on the list for green-belt training but I left the company before I could get into a class.

I am doing 3 Initial PPAP's today for some new parts we are manufacturing for a company that makes kitchen appliances. I'm trying not to fall alseep! :confused3 At least it's Friday! :)

No I was making a joke...

Right now six sigma is being jammed down the throat of Biotech and it causes alot of heated discussions over its usefulness

I will ask DH for a good layman's dedfinition tonight and try to post. I ought to know as it is pretty much his entire job and has been going on 5 years now:lmao: He is forever threatening to 5 S my kitchen--whatever THAT means (something about having a certain place for everything and photos on the inside of the cabinets of the set up--NOT).
He is a Six Sigma Black Belt and a LEAN systems Master Black belt and does lots of trainings and leads dozens of Kaizens (my knowledge of that is to not call during a kaizen and know that the company is paying to order in lunch on those days:rotfl: ) It all Greek (or sould I say Japanese?) to me:confused3

Has he taught you the secret handshake?
Keep holding the line on the kitchen...

Hmmm secret handshake--I'll haev to look into that:upsidedow
Actaully he drives DD11 nuts (in a good natured way) because she is a brown belt in karate and he likes to insist HE is special because HE has a black belt (he doesn't know the first thing about karate).
And don't worry, the kitchen is safe. Even if photos ever did go up I would not pay any attention to them:rotfl:

We went through a Six Sigma process a few years ago and I was an SME for it. Some positive changes came about because of it. It can certainly be usefull, but I wouldn't say it is guaranteed to work for every company in every situation no matter what - nothing is. And like all things, it could possibly be more trouble than it is worth...

You post drives home the point. Six Sigma becomes its own little culture within a company.

I stopped reading right here because what I "know" of it so far is exactly what you describe. I've read up about the program but wanted to hear comments from people who've used it/been subjected to it. LOL

Seems like a WHOLE lotta hooey to me.
