Depends. If it's just us, usually across from each other (although, not always). If we're with others, we sit next to each other.

I prefer to sit across, but when I met my husband he liked to sit next to. So I conceded.

DW and I will be 48 years married in June. We began our "togetherness" apart when dining so we could "look into each other's eyes" and "reach across the table" to hold hands. We will sit apart when dining with others if DW prefers to be next to another individual for ease of conversation. Background noise can be very loud thus requiring being "up close" to have a quieter conversation and by the by(bye), we have plenty of "alone time" to talk.

When I see this I just automatically assume they are waiting for more people to join them and sit on the other side.

Agree- it is SO weird when 2 people are sitting next to each other in a booth- creepy!

yeah, it's awkward looking...like they're waiting for imaginary friends that never come. lol
