Okay--my lil sis (30 yrs old) and I were looking at the SW sale prices for traveling from KC to Chicago and thought about booking a weekend getaway. We have never done anything like this together and would love it! We are both pretty frugal--so would even take SAFE public transportation instead of renting a car.

Anyone have any good suggestions for us? Is there public transportation from Midway? I have been to Chicago twice, but only for a couple of hours both times, so am up for anything! Budget minded though! ::yes::

I go up there once or twice a year for work and always take the L from Midway or O'Hara. I always stay downtown off of Michigan avenue.

Transportation from Midway is easy. The L (orange line) takes you to the loop, but if you get a place north of the river or near the Water Tower, you need to transfer to the red line. Just for the concentration of retail shops and restaurants, anything near Michigan Avenue will do. We usually get a 3 day CTA pass which is good for the L and CTA buses.

Definitely look into using Priceline or Hotwire. There are some decent deals for 3.5* hotels and up. I would recommend checking with Betterbidding.com to steer you in the right direction.

The Orange Line runs directly from Midway downtown and is safe and cheap - it's $2.25 each way. There are TONS of hotels downtown and I always recommend out of town guests use Priceline 4* Magnificent Mile area and they usually get very nice hotels in $75 - $125 range.
