Sister Wives

I just watched the episode where Christine had a small party for Janelle. My gosh does Janelle’s sister look like her. And Christine’s sister resembles her, but sounds just like her.

It's always interesting to me to get a glimpse of the rest of their family members and what they've witnessed through the years with the family.

I haven’t watched last nights episode but the more I think about how Meri is treated I truly believe she got the short end of the stick financially within the family because she only has one child. They never saw her as a complete equal due to that.

In that religion your fertility and how many babies you can churn out is important. The fact that she only had one kid meant to them that she didn’t deserve enough resources from the family and that she had to “earn her keep” by putting more money in the pot. They’ve always felt she should have a smaller home. She was made for years to pay for her ow bills. She paid for Leon’s college by herself.

it's been allot of years since I read the book they all co-wrote but if I recall correctly they said there (and on the show) that all the wives got identical 'allowances' to cover their 'household's' needs (not mortgages but food, clothing, other monthly misc expenses). I remember thinking that Meri ended up pretty well off in that scenario with just the one kid.

I did think it was insulting to all the ex-wives to label Robyn as the “moral compass” of the family. It’s a lot easier to be generous and forgiving when you’re the one who lives with the husband full-time, and he calls you his soul mate.

I thought last night's episode was very helpful and churned up some good insights into the dynamics of the family.

Starting with the fact that Janelle had been married to Meri's brother and then she approached Kody and Meri about joining them. It seems that she was very attracted to Kody for a long time and wanted to be one of his sister wives.

It came to light that Janelle and Meri had differences about when to do the dinner dishes-Meri wanted them done right after dinner and the kitchen clean for the night. Janelle waited until the morning. This was one of the issues that was brought up. They both said it was petty now looking back.

Meri admitted that because Janelle had been married to her brother, it was awkward for Janelle to now be married to Kody, Meri's husband. Janelle was still invited to Meri's parents' house even after the divorce with Meri's brother. And it was stated that her parents liked Janelle.

It was never stated, and I think that it should have been, that all of them were young and immature and I am sure that the culture of their religion did not give them tools to deal with how to be a family in Polygamy and work through jealousy, etc. I think that those were important points that should have been stated by at least one of them.

Apparently, Meri was not one to hold in her feelings and that created issues in the family.

Christine seemed to enjoy seeing Meri stand up to Kody in his apology tour.

When Kody says Meri was high maintenance and Janelle wasn’t, I feel he means Meri spoke up and wanted more out of him than he wanted to give. Janelle was more independent and ok being on her own a lot of the time and that worked for Kody. He wanted to do the bare minimum and that didn’t work for Meri. Janelle was the “easy” wife. Not much push back, more laid back and that’s what Kody likes.
