I'm so sorry. I woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible sinus headache too. I am going to do the neti pot now. I went to the Walmart pharmacy yesterday to get my decongestants theI have been out of and they didn't have any. I REALLY NEED them. They didn't have any Sudafed 4 hour either. I will have to try Rite Aid today. I have been without them for too long. Hope you feel better soon. For some reason, the last few weeks have been hard for me.

I haven't read all of the responses so I'm sorry if this is a repeat. Have you tried a neti pot? Just do a google search and you will find one. They also have them at just about any health food store.

You use a saline mix with warm water. You lean over the sink and pour it up one nostril and it flushes your sinuses. All of the goo comes out the other nostril. IT WORKS!!!!! My DD (6) has allergy/sinus issues and she can do this on her own and she doesn't even have to take meds anymore. My mom went to Whole Foods to get one and the lady told her that they can barely keep them in stock anymore.

If you have any questions, just ask!!

Now, as far as infections go, I have to sleep in a recliner so my head is propped up. I take Sudafed (not Sudafed PE - the good, pseudophedriene Sudafed behind the pharmacy counter. YES, THERE IS A DIFFERNECE IN HOW WELL IT WORKS!!) every 3 hours. I alternate Tylenol and Advil every 4 hours. I have a vaporizer running where I'm sleeping so the room is constantly moist, and I take hot showers to help loosen up the sinuses. I also drink anything hot, and lots of water. For antibiotics I usually take Amoxicillin or Cipro (the generic brands of each, of course). NO anitihistamines, Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec or Benadryl. And like I said, no decongestants from the cold medicine aisle - you want the ones behind the pharmacy counter!!!

.

YES! I used to wonder why the decongestants in the aisle like Sudafed PE didn't seem to work. I spoke with 3 different pharmacists at 3 different stores who all told me that stuff rarely works and someone was even trying to get it taken off the shelves b/c it's pretty much useless and people are spending millions on it. It MUST be the pills bought at the pharmacy. You have other very good suggestions. I do them as well.

I have also found breathing in steam with apple cidar vinegar gets your sinuses running. Yes, it smells, but anything to get that stuff out.

Since I have started taking Singulair last Oct, I have not had a sinus infection (yet). :woohoo: Regular allergy meds do nothing for me except make my heart race. I have found Singulair to be my wonder drug. I have not had it for 3 days, but my prescription should be filled today. My head is pretty dizzy now and I'm looking forward to having both my decongestants and Singulair again. I should mention that I am also on Nasacort.

I actually got the electric version-- see post 100--
its suppose to be better than the neti-- cause it pulsed and activates your cilia along with irrigating .

!!

That's great your DD is using it. Good to start early. My DD just turned 17 and I have been trying to get her to give it a try for over a year and NO WAY. She won't even consider it.

For some reason, the last few weeks have been hard for me.

last few weeks have been rough for me too--
I looked up the pollen in my area-- and the major allergen is grass--
I know I'm usually bad during august and hayfever season--
so now I guess I'm allergic to grass too

I have to close my windows when the lawn is being mowed.

I really stuff up in a car and can breath so much better when the air is on.

Sorry if this is a repeat, I didn't have time to read all the responses. When I was pregnant with DD7 I had a really bad sinus infection. Unfortunatley, because I was pregnant, the dr's wouldn't give me much to get rid of it. What the Dr suggested and worked great, was a vapor tent. Boil a pot of water, take it off the stove. Hold your face over the steam, not too close, and cover your head with a towel allowing it form a tent over you and the pot. Breath in the steam through your nose until there's no more steam. Worked great at clearing the stuffiness and sinus pressure.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Keeps your head warm..for me I've found it helps clear up my congestion when my nose is stuffy from a cold and I can't breathe. DH and a co-worker say it's worked for them too. Hey, it's worth a try. Drink alot a water to hydrate too.

I feel the same way. I have been in agony for a week now. I finally broke down and went to the doctors yesterday. I don't go unless I'm dying. I ended up having a sinus and ear infection. I am also on flonaise. I haven't tried it before but I am willing to give it a shot. I have never had allergies as bad as this year before. It is unbelievable. I've tried everything you guys have mentioned. This time nothing has worked for me. I am hoping that between the penecillin and the flonaise I will start to feel better. I never knew how bad it could be. Has everyone else been up for days. I can't sleep. Nothing works and the stuff just keeps going down the back of my throat. it could always but worse, but this isn't fun. Here's to hoping that everyone feels better soon!

I understand. I'm having a difficult time too. My nose and upper teeth are throbbing. If you breath in steam, add some apple cidar vinegar to it. I think I will do that later. I'm off to do the neti pot. Hope you all feel better soon.

I got a sinus infection for the first time when I began teaching and have had one every year since then.

When I feel like I will start having problems I take a walgreens generic version of Zyrtec. It works great. I take it when I go to bed and by morning feel 100% better.

That said, I have heard good things about the sinus flush from multiple people so maybe I will have to try that too.

I haven't read all of the responses.

Last month, my DS-10 was hospitalized with sinus infection.

His ped. had given him the Zpack but, after a few days his head started to hurt worse. He said his head felt like it was going to explode.

We took him to the hospital, he had a ct scan of his sinsuis. The infection was eroding the bone and the dr was wottied the infection could move into the brain and facial bone.

He was hospitalized for 3 days with strong IV antibiotics. He cam home tih strong antibotics for 14 days plus nasal steroids.

Went bac with the ENt for a follow up and stayed on meds for another 21 days.

He just went for a second CT scan last week and waiting for results. He may have to go back on antibotics and it could take many months to clear.

If you do n't feel better, please follow up with the Dr. I had know idea this could happen.

The poor kid. Hope he is feeling better soon. I'm surprised the ped put him on Zithromax for a sinus infection. I was told by 2 different Dr's that it does not work well for sinus infections. Then I found out for myself. Since the Z-pack is easy on my stomach unlike most antibiotics, I tried taking it with a sinus infection. Sure enough it did not work and I had to be put on something else.

Another one with a sinus infection here! Mine is a complication of brain surgery, so not that uncommon, but really annoying and potentially deadly in my case. I'm on 10 days of Cipro. Any other ideas other than neti pots or steam or anything like that? I can't force anything up into the sinuses 'cause I still have a hole that goes to my brain open for another couple of weeks. I've never had a sinus infection before, so this is all new territory for me.
