Single Parent - Do I Need A Letter

I'm a single parent taking my 9yr old DD to Orlando. Does anyone know if immigration in the US will require some form of letter off her mother to say she knows her daughter is out of the country.

We have no legal document to say who has custody, her mother left 3 years ago and dd has always been with me.

I am a single parent and I took my 3 without a letter. They were a little older, but 2 were still minors.

I would still check, but I think you will be fine.

I think, as long as you have a passport (and, i would say birth certificate, to be on the safe side) you should be absolutely fine.

For all the officials know, her mother might not be alive anymore so how would you get a letter then?

I have two DDs from my first marriage - they have different surnames to me and I have never had any problems travelling with them.

I went on my own with my two DDs (11 & 4 at the time) last October and was never questioned and my passport is still in my maiden name so we were also travelling with different surnames. I don't think you'll have any problems.

Thanks for the replies.

Well the American Embassy don't have a helpline so I phoned the Florida Tourist board. The lady there said it's not a requirement and the only time it is likely to be questioned is if the British authorities have sent notice to America about a possible abduction or possibly where the child has a different surname to the parent. In that case if you have a resdidency order it's useful to take it, and in cases where you don't then for peace of mind just take shomething that shows the child lives with you ie Child benefit letter etc.

Peace of mind now.
