I got an email for a great deal on 7 night Magic. I am tempted, but need a roomie or will be s/o. Anyone ever done single on Magic? I had a so so experience on the Wonder, but I am not giving up on DCL, it's just suchj short notice that no one can go with me (not that I mind).....

I'll go with you! :) hehe

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago where someone asked the same question and most of the responses seemed in favor of single cruisers. See here:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=300833

They do a few "meet and greet" activities the first couple of days of the cruise where you might be able to meet someone else. I guess my way of thinking is - nothing beats time on the Magic... and if the only way to do it was alone, I would :)

Come on down - I haven't cruised with anyone from VA since 1995!!!!Akkkkk.

I imagine I would even go to the singles meet and greets, beings that I will only be "seperated" from DH!!!

Still the temptation is great, it would mean no WDW trip till August, oh well, I could trade that for a cruise.

I sailed on the Magic on my own in October of 2001. I enjoyed it. If you're OK doing things on your own at home, you'll do fine on the Magic. There is almost always someone with whom to strike up a conversation.

I was assigned to a dinging table with three couples, all about my age. I did not feel awkward or uncomfortable at all. Disney had a singles table for lunch in Parrot Cay. Did have lunch in Lumiere's one day. Had lunch with the woman who plays the harp in the Victoria & Albert restaurant in the Grand Floridian. You never know who you will meet.

I had a wonderful cruise on my own. Go and enjoy.

You should check to see if there are other DISers going on the dates you are considering...then you'll have other people to link up with. We've met many DISers in the course of all our Disney cruisers, and they have always been great! I think the best people hang out here :D

The single occupancy rates are almost 3 times the per person double, so that is out of the question. Like I said, way to short of notice to get anyone to go with, so I will just have to put it back into the sometime in the future bucket.

Marsha, where are you looking at prices? I travel single much of the time (my DH is not into Disney or cruising). I occasionally receive a TA rate, but even full fare, direct pricing for single with DCL seems to run between 150% and 180% the per person double price, depending on the cruise. You say nearly 3 times as much? I am really curious - Are you perhaps talking about a suite? Or is this a holiday cruise? When is the date?

This was for 1/25/03 I got an email quoting 599.00 p/p double, so I asked for a single quote, it came back Category 12 (lowest cat) 1599.00. Way too much. I heard DCL does 175% for single, they must do it on the brochure rate, non discounted. It is just too much for me to pay, no DC discount , no repeat passenger discount, (yes, I have DCL'd before) and that included the $50 T/A rebate!

Sorry, but I don't see the value of that, expecially with having to add on airfare, a hotel for the night before (can't get there from here in time), transport to the pier, tips and BAR tab (gotta have at least one tropical drink), it is entirely too much to pay.

The $599 per person rate is for cat 11, not cat 12. The cat 12 prices on ALL of the discounted cruises are way higher than cat 11. Try getting a quote and specifying cat 11? I went to DCL's website and they only had cat 6 and 7 available for the 1/25 sailing but for the 1/4 sailing, minus transfers and insurance I got a quote of just over $1000 for a single person in cat 11 (it was about $350 more for 2 people).

mickeyfan1 - Without transfers or insurance, DCL's website is currently showing a price of $1882.70 total for two people (so $941.35 per person double occupancy) for Cat 12 on that sailing. For s/o they are showing $1610.35. 175% would take it to $1647.36, so it's close. Three times the pp d/o rate would be $2824.05, which it is not. That is why I was curious. I guess the e-mail on the special rate you were offered came from a travel agency and not from DCL. Thank you for the clarification.

And Lisa: When I just looked at DCL's site they were showing Cat 6, 7 and 12. No Cat 11 availability for the date mickeyfan1 was looking at, so no deep discounts.

When I got the quote back, the cat 11 was sold out, but cat 12 is a "lesser room". Oh well, like I said, way to much to pay. I know all of you here rave about DCL, but maybe it's just me, I really thought that the cruise experience was lacking. I went in 2000, I thought the food was average, very instutional, my waiter and assistant server were really bad, 1 trip to the table for drinks, one trip for food delivery, no refills, one evening the 7 year old girl at the table came in late to dinner and the waiter told her they would not serve her, the kitchen was closed, and we never saw him after that. I did like the Hercules show, I thought it was way better than Disney Dreams, but the over all feeling I left with was "I will not do DCL again, for a long time". I really wish I could get as excited as all of you, I guess I will stick to the other cruise lines and WDW.

Marsha,

The same thing happened to me in that I heard about the $599/pp deal for the Cat 11 cabins. I requested a quote through DU and got a mail back saying the Cat 11s were sold out, but that I could get the Cat 9 at a much higher rate. I understand these things happen, but what really bugged me about the whole thing is that just 2 days later, I got a mass e-mail from DU saying that they had Cat 11s on special for $599 for the same sailing I had requested a quote for.

At the very least, that should have been taken out of the email so that people didn't think they could still get the same deal.
