Since when are tips expected at fast food places?!

I don't do fast food very often, but twice in the last while I've stopped for a quick meal. One was at Subway, the other was at KFC. Both places had a "tip" option on their debit machines that you had to go through before you could pay. Since when is fast food a service that earns tips?!

My guess would be that their terminals are coded wrong.

Our Subway has a tip jar. I've never put a tip in there. I don't like tip jars anywhere, even in bars. If a person wants to leave a tip, they'll do it. It's rude to have a jar suggesting it, imo.

I just always assumed it was the kind of program they used for their credit card machine and just cross out the tip part and write the total at the bottom. I never thought they expected a tip. I know my DS use to work at Subway and they never expected anyone to tip.

I've seen the tip section included on several receipts at fast food places when I pay with debit or credit. I usually just skip that section and view at as their generic machines.

If you're not tipping be sure to run a line through that space and write your total in that space. A friend had a restaurant that added in a tip after she had left cash for the tip. And no it wasn't a large party just her and her daughter. She disbuted and had to contact the store manager who assured her the person would be fired.

I'm sure that's what it is... that's one of the things we do in my office. There are so many different codes and programming for credit card terminals. We have different coding for "retail" and "restaurant" terminals. A lot of times salons and things like that get coded as a "restaurant" because of the tip feature.... it would make sense that a fast food place would be a restaurant, but from a programming standpoint it's frequently processed as "retail."

Places like Dunkin Donuts though have cups on the counter that say they are for tips. I've seen a lot of places that have added tip jars to the counter. I just don't tip in those places. If I go to a sit down place, sure. If you put my hamburger on a tray and I have to carry it myself to the table, nope you're not getting a tip. What's next? Are we going to see tip jars in Macys and other department stores?

Sometimes we tip at local places, local coffee shops or ice cream places. We live in an area that still, thank goodness, supports more local businesses over the commercialized chains (although we have a few chains in our town), & I like to continue to support them so the commercialized places don't take over!

I think in some cases the tip jars are there so people know that it's okay to tip if they want to. I don't like them, because it's not going specifically to the person who gave the good service, but I can understand why they're there.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of tipping. BUT if I'm happy with what someone did for me I feel that I should be able to acknowledge that. And writing a "thank you" note sometimes doesn't do it for me.

I was totally annoyed by a tip jar at Color Me Mine. My daughters and I went in there to paint pottery. The employees greeted us and showed us where things were, and that was IT. How rude to expect a tip for providing nothing but minimal service. I just couldn't figure that out???
