Since when are Disney Princesses not appropriate for children?

I just have to come here and let out a big scream. :headache: AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! I have just been on one of the blogs I follow, it's a catholic blog, it started out as a rant against Katy Perry and her attire and the Sesame Street Deal. And then it somehow got turned around as an attack against the Disney Princesses. They are "two bit hookers that show too much cleavage" dontcha know? :furious:

I stopped arguing. There's no point debating with closed minded individuals :confused3 Sorry, for my rant. Just had to let it out.:littleangel:

I hear you - I have a friend who didn't want her daughter watching Disney princess movies because they "teach the wrong values" - Huh? She said they teach that a girl needs a man, and that being pretty and having nice clothes are what girls need to succeed. Again, i was sitting here thinking :eek::sad2: I guess she didn't think too much of me since we love princesses in our house! :lovestruc

I know! I have a friend whose DD will not let her DGD watch any Disney movies. Okay. But she said that the little girl watches max and Ruby..............and Max is one fresh bunny!

I figure that parents get to decide what is okay for their kids but I don't understand why everyone all has to agree with each other. To each their own.

A great comeback that always shuts people up who say stuff like this is "well I teach my daughter that movies are movies, they are fake and have no bearing on real life. It is fun to watch make believe and fantasy movies, but they do not dictate how we conduct ourselves in real life."

I have also used this defense when people attack me for letting my son "violently inappropriate" movies like all of the Star Wars flicks* and Indiana Jones and Transformers.

* as far as SW movies go, ds has been watching them since he was little, like 3. We did NOT allow him to watch the Revenge of the Sith until just recently like the last year and a half, because the scene where Anakin is getting burned up is just awful. BUT he does know the difference between real life and movies/tv and does not get scared or scarred by watching them. IMVHO, of course. :thumbsup2

Cinderella teaches you that one pair of shoes can change your life. ;)

:rotfl2::thumbsup2 My DH got me a card that basically said that once. Something about it's all about the right pair of shoes and had a picture of Cinderella's slipper.

Honestly -- you can twist absolutely ANYTHING around if you want. Every single Disney movie, children's story, you name it can be twisted into anything.

Hansel & Gretel? Goldilocks (I mean really -- talk about breaking & entering!), etc... I think we even had a huge thread about this eons ago and how each movie could be viewed if you wanted to get technical.

Seriously? Did the princesses get some cosmetic work done recently that I didn't hear about? Because honestly, Snow White, Cinderella and Princess Aurora are almost flat-chested and their style of dress shows no cleavage at all. Now I'll concede that Ariel and Jasmine show more skin but one of them is a mermaid.

How old is your son? Hubby has put his foot down about Sith (I haven't even watched it, actually), but more for the Anakin vs padewan scene. I'm fine with that. But DS has gotten so into Indy just b/c of Legos (and his uncle bought the Lego Indy videogame as a treat for DS when we visit him, we don't own a videogame system at all) and people keep wondering what the difference is between Indy and, for instance, POTC...all I can say is "having a living human's face melting off is different than cursed pirates", but the older he gets the more quizzical people are becoming about that LOL.

OP, I don't think that's really an *attack*. I mean...the princesses DO tend to marry men to become happy...and the princesses DO wear gowns that come down a bit low on the chestal region. And they don't even have the ice skating outfit flesh-colored stuff like is holding up Katy's dress. Though, of course, they are cartoons (the movies of course)...

And yeah, the princess movies are, to me, a bit odd... It's a reason I liked Enchanted so much, apart from where S Sarandon has to elaborate and state clearly how different it is that Giselle is saving the man (why why did they have to do it, it was obvious on its own ugh), because while she is man-focused, she also finds her own heart's desire at the same time she's finding a more appropriate man...

But saying all that isn't an *attack*, it's just gleaned by watching the movies... DS himself (who loves the princess movies b/c he loves princesses) wonders what the role of the men in those movies is...the princesses sit in towers or sleep while the men are slaying dragons and finding the women...quite a bit of effort on the man's part! Different perspective, seeing it through a boy's eyes.

WOW, I just stopped caring about your point because I can't stop thinking about the fact you mentioned the Faith of the people on the Website. What exactly does that have to do with anything? It's not like i don't have my suspicions I'd just prefer for you to explain yourself, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here.

He just turned 8. I forgot about the younglings, that was another reason (although they didn't actually SHOW him slashing them, did they? I forget, it's been a while since I've watched it - dh was the one who said "no sith til he's older") He has watched Indy a few times, Raiders, Last Crusade and the newest one (thats all we have on DVD lol!) and he liked them but doesn't obsess over them like Star Wars! I agree about it being totally different from POTC, but again it was nothing like the Sith, and my ds has a good grip on reality vs. tv/movies. He watched Indy last summer, so he was 7. He wanted to watch because they got the video game.

Peter Rabbit married his cousin. Of course, I found this out after I stenciled the little incest loving bunny all over DD's nursery.

If they aren't trying to impose their values on you then who cares? Why would it make you furious that they don't like Disney Princesses? It isn't an indictment of you.

Because they were arguing with me when I dared to disagree that I thought they were inappropriate. For real. When I said that I didn't see anything wrong they started coming out with the two bit hooker stuff and not even appropriate for adult eyes.... I dunno... Just annoyed me. I'm a catholic too, which is why I subscribe to the blog. :)

My son is a die hard Star Wars fan. Has lived and breathed Star wars since he was 2. He has seen all the movies so often he has them memorized. He saw the Last one about the Sith in the Theater and he was 6. It hasn't hurt him a bit.

He has also watched all the LOTR movies starting as a preschooler. All that did was encourage him to read the original Tolkein series of books in 4th grade.

He knows the difference between fake and real and being a good person and doing awful things like Anakin did when he turned to the dark side. It is a good conversation starter about how evil people can be and how they do awful things and what could drive them to it, also how hard it was on Obi Wan to have to do what he had to do.

For the record, I did say I didn't think Katy Perry appearing on Sesame Street was appropriate even if they wrapped her head to toe like a Mummy. Maybe I'm a hypocrite. I just don't see it as the same thing.

No, you don't see Anakin killing all the younglings*, and DS (6) has seen (in whole or in part) all of the six Star Wars movies, plus the animated Clone Wars stuff. I won't inflict the Star Wars Holiday Special on him until he is older, but that's because I don't want to risk damaging his love of SW. :lmao:

I have kept Indy, Transformers, and the like from him. Not because of violence, but due to language. Sith might be gruesome, but I don't want to hear DS (or worse, DD, who is only 3) walking around the house, while playing Indiana Jones, and hear "You dirty rotten son of a b----". (He has time to learn those words - I can't keep him from swearing forever, but another year or two would be nice.)

The kids have watched part of the LoTR stuff - the movies are pretty long, so they haven't seen them all yet.

* I'm not sure why, but Anakin killing the younglings has really kept me from buying the "he repented, and turned back to good" at the end of Jedi. Blowing up Alderan? No problem. Slaughtering a bunch of 5- and 6-year olds in person? Big problem.

I think that you might be reading more into this than is actually there. A little while ago, I was on another forum and referenced a conversation that had taken place over here. I called this place 'a Disney forum' in apparently the same manner as she used 'Catholic blog'. It gave a small amount of description, that's all.

Well if she just stated that it was a religious forum/blog, it's easy to conclude that there are several of them that probably have an issue with the Princesses. Stating that it's a Catholic forum, gives you an understanding that the Disney Princesses are not considered the worst thing in the world to those that have a Catholic belief.

In essence, it's a bunch of weirdo moms trying to blame everything in the world on the devil or something.

I agree. AND I'm not sure I'll be visiting that blog anymore because those women are just plain... um :rolleyes1 Well, I'll keep my polite opinion to my polite self as I don't want to attack anyone else's view point like they did mine. Different Strokes for Different Folks I suppose. :littleangel:
