Since Pleasure Island looks like it's on the way out...

what have been various poster's experiences at the Boardwalk?

I'm thinking of not going to Pleasure Island on my next trip, but instead taking a sojourn to the Boardwalk. I have a few questions about it.

1.) What's the Atlantic Dance Hall like? If I recall correctly, that's the name of their dance club.

2.) Is Jellyrolls' worthy enough of the 21-and-over moniker?

3.) I'll be staying at Old Key West (as always), so how late do the buses run from the Boardwalk to there?

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

John "MoreorlessaDisneyfan" Kilduff

Hope this helps:

1 - Have not seen anyone in Atlantic Dance in a while. Have seen wedding parties and such, but not much activity there during the week. Weekends may be totally different.

2 - Yes.

3 - They don't. To get there, you would have to either take a taxi (which would be quickest), or catch a bus to DTD or a park, then catch the OKW bus from there. You could also bus to DTD and take the boat, I believe.
If you are there later at night, your bus option would probably be only to DTD, then transport over to OKW whichever way you select.

I am sure it depends what time of year you go! We went in off-season, and the Boardwalk was pretty unexciting during the week. The weekend things livened up a bit, but still wasn't that lively. Never saw anything interesting happen in our entire 10-days at Atlantic Dance. Jellyrolls got really busy on the weekend!

Pleasure Island on the way out!!!!!?????!!!!! :earseek: We loved PI, especially the storyteller thingy!

ps...the boardwalk when we were there May 05 was kinda sleepy really,
but admittedly we were there after the parks, DTD, PI and all had closed,
and were heading home to the Yachtclub resort, so maybe we missed something.?

Not sure I agree PI is "on the way out"--seems to have had a bit of a resurgance recently, if anything--but of the two Boardwalk clubs, JRs is far and away better than Atlantic Dance Hall.

JRs can still get a good crowd, especially on weekends, and is quite fun; older crowd than PI, tho, I would say the majority are 30s thru 40s. The Dance Hall is basically dead, lately they do not even bother putting anyone at the door to check IDs.

While a night at JRs is a blast, keep in mind all the clubs at PI are still open--and Motion and 8-Traxx usually have at least a small crowd as the night progresses. Personally, I don't think a trip to WDW is complete without a stop at the Adventurer's Club, but that is just me.

Pleasure Island is definitely NOT on the way out. Renovations continue on shopping venues plus a new bridge from Downtown Disney West Side. There's a good summary of PI and future plans on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleasure_island

The link that you provided actually seems to promote the idea that PI is being phased out. The west end stage and hub stage have been dismantled and removed. The phrase 'declining attendance' sounds rather ominous. And the discontinuation of the nightly fireworks all point to a location that's seen its better days. Church Street Station went thru similar cutbacks before its ultimate demise.

I believe it's being refurbished and the focus will be more on restaurants/shopping. Adventurer's Club, Comedy Warehouse, and 8Trax should still be there.

The fireworks were discontinued a couple years ago because they "got old" and of course are not cheap to stage each night, even on nights when there are not that many tourists in town. Disney continues to invest in Pleasure Island as a destination for adults. If it proves true that all clubs will revert to 21+ in early 2007, we might see things get a bit more adult-oriented. They added a live show in Mannequins earlier this year in which two tall female tightly-dressed mannequins put on a couple of dance moves to the beat of the music that's rather risque by Disney-standards. They've added new props as well; 8TRAX has added more monitors to view the music videos they play. I think they continue to experiment with things to see what works to increase the crowds. But in no way is there any indication that P.I. will be phased-out. There are way too many adults staying on Disney grounds that want night life and Disney does not want to lose them to Universal's CityWalk or to some of the new clubs opening in the International Drive area.

We just got back from staying at the Boardwalk 10/1-10/6. JR was fun. Definitely an older crowd say mid 30-up. PI was busy when we were there. It was a Tuesday pm. Ragland Road was packed. Adventurers Club was busy. Motions and Mannequins weren't full, but had a decent crowd. They're working to remodel. Putting in a T-Rex restaurant, kinda like Rainforest cafe.

The building between the Adventurers Club and Rock'nRoll Beach Club is being refurbished and will include a few new shops as well as a "fast food" type restaurant. An outdoor patio area with tables and chairs is already open where the Hub Stage used to be located; this is also where the water taxi stop will be located.

The T-Rex restaurant won't be on Pleasure Island; it will be built out in what is currently a parking lot, near McDonald's.

when we went to pleasure island it was PACKED. It was my 21st birthday and we had to wait in long lines to get into the clubs. we had a fabulous time overall.

by the way, this was during off season!

I usually stay at the Boardwalk and Atlantic Dance is hit or miss. People tend to wander in and out. The musice is Top 40's. Jellyrolls was okay for me but I think the older crowd enjoys it more. Usually the crowd at the BW is people are staying onsite or attending conventions. I had a better time at PI the last time I went with two friends. It's more of a club type feel. I also think more local people go to PI.
