This is from my mother's recipe box. It's so simple and seems impossible to forget, yet it is written on a card.

Sadly, my sister and myself had to teach ourselves to cook at a very early age out of sense of self preservation. I still eat this at holidays though. You can use Fat Free Cool Whip and cut some calories or use the Extra Rich Cool Whip for a treat. Cool Whip works better than real whip cream, it's more stable. Any which way you make it, it's a true Atkins nightmare.
1 container of thawed Cool Whip
2 (15 oz.) cans chunky fruit cocktail, drained
1 (11 oz.) can mandarin oranges, drained
1/2 cup flake coconut
1/2 cup miniature marshmallows
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup cored and chopped apple
Stir together all ingredients, except the apple, cover and refrigerate for 2 hours to overnight. When thoroughly chilled, stir in apple and serve.
