IMO, Idol jumped the shark when Taylor Hicks won. Simon's bailing because he sees the end is near.

I predict that this X-Factor show will take its place. It's basically Idol without age limits and includes group acts.

True...but I think that his 'personality' is part of what makes the show what it is.

This is one of those proverbial "what's this show about" questions. It's funny: In various threads, I see people with very different views about what American Idol is (or perhaps, should be) about. The most common claim people make is that the show is about finding talent. If that was ever the case, then there is definitely a path forward for the show without Simon. If instead the show has always just been about stacking cringe-worthy moments together, where Simon brow-beats or disparages someone to tears, then yeah, there isn't much hope for a post-Simon AI.

Of course, I think Ellen is a wierd choice for a judge too.(although I love her!!) I guess only time will tell.

Personally, I think all the show has to be is entertaining. All television just needs to be entertaining. And as such, there is definitely a path forward for the show.

Yeah, Taylor Hicks winning was just shameful. I really don't see anyone replacing him. I could see them getting someone who tried to be a Simon wannabe, and it failing miserably.

Hopefully they're not going to make that mistake, of actually trying to, literally, "replace" Simon. Clearly, there are some things that must be -- there needs to be advice about how to better perform. Simon provides that, but that's not what Simon "is", in terms of what made his participation in the show unique. It is absolutely essential that they not try to "replace" that aspect of Simon. That would be ridiculous. They need to fill the logistical gap on the panel -- maybe ("maybe" because I think Kara already does so), but the absolutely should not attempt to slip in a token "arrogant sob".

I don't know. I think it's about musical performances, so I'm guessing that means singing, instrument playing, and dancing. I heard on TV that the contestants will be doing "full blown musical productions."

They also don't want their ratings to drop, but I predict that is exactly what will happen. Let's face it. The other judges are boring at best. Simon is the only one who tells it as it is. I get so tired of hearing the other judges spouting the same things over and over with just a slight variation. Ellen has already stated that she will not stay with the show after Simon leaves. IMHO, this will be the final full season of AI.

Well, of course they don't "want" their ratings to drop, but they're not idiots. They know their ratings are going to drop. They also know that their ratings can drop by 1/3 and they'll still be #1 in their time slot. And their ratings can even drop by 1/2 and they'll still be able to call it a win.

So it isn't a matter, I don't think, of whether or not their ratings will go down, but rather whether or not the ratings will be halved or worse.

Let's face it. The other judges are boring at best.

And Marcia Cross looks plain standing next to Teri Hatcher. However, take Marcia Cross on her own, and she's incredibly beautiful. (If you happen not to like Teri Hatcher, then you can surely find two other actresses that would fit the analogy better for you.)

The point is that, without Simon, Kari, especially, may become a better contributor to the mix. (I don't think Randy really has much range, in this regard, so what we're getting now is probably all we're ever going to get.)

Simon is the only one who tells it as it is.

Kari does as well -- she just finds herself sometimes having to compensate for Simon's exaggeration.

And just to be clear, I don't think we're talking about another 9 years... I think we'll see another full season of AI, maybe two. And possibly one or both over the summer.

No, she was joking. Fox Chairman Peter Rice made a clear statement about that, when it was brought up to him.

In another joke, on her daytime program, Ellen made reference how she's going to have to be the "mean one now " (since Simon is leaving), so you can read that to mean she's actually planning on staying on for another year.

Again, both were jokes, so neither should be taken seriously.

As it is, she's incredibly talented. And really quite insightful, when Simon's not trying to cut her off.

Kara does have the body for it, and she is talented.
