Silly dinner questions

When we go out to eat as a family we usually always go to what we call crayon restaurants (restaurants that have crayons and things for the kids to color) because we know that those places are kid friendly. Although my kids are really unbelievably well behaved in restaurants should I bring something for the little one to do while waiting for dinner? Is the dinner rather long? I'm afraid they would possibly have a long wait if we are seated with other people and they are late comers. Do they usually have something to entertain them while they wait for dinner or have parents found the kids aren't bored at all?

My son, who is an extremely picky eater, asked me to ask if there are hamburgers available in the restaurants at dinner time? If not, am I allowed to smuggle one in from Pluto's?

We just got back and they have menus to color and crayons. They are also very good about bringing the children's food out very quickly. Barb has a picture of the menus (which includes what they can order) on her site - www.castawayclub.com. They do not have hamburgers on the menu, but I think it would be just fine to bring one in. They want everyone to be happy above all else!! If you have anymore questions I would love to try to answer them.

Yes they do have crayons and a 'kids' menu in the dining rooms. I don't remember specifically if hamburgers were on it because my DD doesn't eat them:rolleyes: . But they do have pizza, chicken fingers, & mac & cheese. They may have had hot dogs too but I don't remember.

Our server, Eddie from Turkey, did magic tricks for the kids at our table every night and that kept them entertained. One night the girls tried to replicate his 'magic toothpick' trick. They spent close to an hour but were never successful.

Thank you Mary Lynne & SC Minnie for your replys. I just checked out the kids menus and as unbelievable as it seems he is so picky that he probably wouldn't eat anything that they have on the kids menu and definately nothing off of the adults menu. I can always feed him earlier or hope they have french fries or rolls at dinner. Even better let him have ice cream bars for dinner. It's his vacation too and I'm determined not to fight with him over what he eats that week.

I do know that they have french fries and rolls at all the dinners. That is basically what my daughter ate for dinner the seven days we were on the cruise!

Yeah! Problem solved he will be thrilled. Not exactly a well balanced meal but he'll survive a week. Glad to know I'm not the only one with such a picky child.

It doen't really matter if its on the menu or not, if they have it on the ship, they will make it for you for dinner. So hambugers will not be a problem in the dinning room. I read on anonther thread where the server brought a DS or DD the same thing for dinner every night (something from the first evening's menu) even though it was not on the menu.

Heck, even their vegies are good!!

The biggest problem with my son (age 11) was that he wanted to get out of the shirt, tie and slacks as soon a possible. He ordered off of both the kids and adults menu - sometimes both at the same meal.

they would bring the kids their food before the adults even ordered. If our table mates were late or we were late they NEVER made anyone wait to eat.

On our recent trip on the Wonder, they brought the kid's dinners at the same time they brought out any appetizers the adults ordered.

The servers are great with kids. Ours were 8/10 and 10/12 when we sailed. On the first cruise the servers automatically brought out the kids menus. Mine took one look and said "can't we eat the real food" (ok I have the opposite in pickiness). On a couple of occasions they ordered items that were not to their liking - either TOO spicy or something. A replacement was immediately produced!

And they played with the kids at an appropriate level. Obviously for these ages it was different than we saw with littler ones. Alan was from France and discovered our DD had an interest in French - by the end of the cruise she was actually able to order her dinner in French. Ok, the basics surrounding words with the actual item in English but she still talks about how wonderful he was!

SC MINNIE - We had Edie on our May cruise. Isn't he wonderful!!! The little girl at our table wanted to do the trick where the quarter goes through the cup; but was so afraid her finger would get caught!! He even had the adults going with the tricks. We were all trying to figure out how he did them.

Hope we can get at his table next May!

Our server had a long conversation with our two DS about the Gameboys games :) The head waiter also played on the Gameboy... and looking around at other tables, the kids are almost if not like, "kings and queens" during dinner time... :D

SC Minnie

I just read your post above where you were talking about Eddie doing the Magic toothpick trick for the girls. It made me laugh out load thinking about the look on their faces!!

(SC Minnie & family were our tablemates on our January cruise and we will be sitting together again on our $99 cruise in October)

My teen Girl Scouts will love this sort of thing. Really! I have seen them at very fancy restaurants, worried about thier mascara or whatever, then asking for the kid's menue and crayons so they could color likethe tykes at the next table. And magic tricks? They'll never leave! (Could they get the early AND late seating?) They are too adventurous eaters...two of them want to try escargo and one wannt something she saw on one of Barb's menues with goat cheese. I feel so sorry for mom's of picky eaters. Must be very difficult. Hope they find something new that they might be surprised!
