Silk Wrap for nails?

What is a silk wrap? I used to get acrylic nails but stopped because of how much damage it was doing to my nails. I don't like manicures because I feel like I can paint my nails and put lotion on myself for cheaper than $15 . Is a silk wrap actually over your real nail? Is it very damaging? TIA!

They put a layer of silk on your nail, similar to the way the acrylic is done, but it's not made from powder, it's actually a cloth-like piece that they lay over it after they put the tip on (or if you don't need tips, just overtop your nail). I had them years ago and really liked them. They held up better than any acrylics I'd ever had and looked MUCH more natural.
