Side Mounts?

What exactly are these and how do you make them. I have seen them on ebay and they look like those old coin holders to me.

I recently bought square side mounts from bargainpack. I haven't used them yet, just couldn't pass up the deal!!!

I bought a set of three plain ones and have used them once. I covered it with patterned paper and then stuck a small picture underneath. I then put it on my journaling strip. It turned out cute!

I have seen them in magazines, stamped and inked, with embellishments inside, too.
