Help. My 12 year old Sheltie just had a scary episode. He was laying on his side on the floor and started wretching. He's not a barfer-he might vomit 2x a year or so. Anyway, he continued to lay on his side while he vomited up his dog food (seemed to be about half of what he ate-ate about 4 hours ago). I thought it was strange that he was just laying there, so I called him and he kind of staggered for a bit and was panting. I carried him downstairs and he's sleeping now. What do you think? It probably doesn't warrant a trip to the ER vet right now, but I am scared to go to bed and worried about leaving him home while at work tomorrow.

I think you need to stay home from work and call your vet and take him in first thing tomorrow. If you can't do that, then I would go see the ER vet tonight. That's a VERY unusual way for a dog to vomit, they don't lay down to do that, and if he doesn't vomit normally then I think he needs to be seen.

I hope he feels better soon. :)

At almost 15 my Bailey did the same thing, I did take him to the vet the next day & he was acting fine there was not anything much we could do. Putting him on Barbs was an option they gave us, we did not do that. We went almost a year before another one.

alot of my friends & my sisters dogs have them a few times a year, We were told that that kind is a "wiring" issue. Baileys was an age issue.

Hmm, sounds like he might have had a seizure or something like that. I think you're going to want to take him to the vet in the morning first thing. You can't mess around with this old doggies. They're pretty frail.

Update: He was very lethargic and out of it, so I took him to the ER vet. Dh followed with the kids. His gums were pink and his heart was beating rapidly. His abdomen was swollen, they drew fluid from it, and it was all blood- he was bleeding from a ruptured spleen. We had him put to sleep. Thanks for the replies.

Oh, I am SO SO sorry. :sad1: I thought it sounded serious. Shelties are my favorite breed of dogs and my heart goes out to you and your family. :grouphug:

Oh my goodness. How terrible! I am so sorry you lost your doggy.

Thanks again. I'm just glad it was quick and we were all able to be with him.I it was very peaceful, and the kids handle it well. Very mature, said goodbye, stayed in the room, etc. We're taking the day off today and are currently enjoying a McD's breakfast. :)

:sad1: I'm so sorry for the loss of your pet.

I'm so sorry about your poor dog. :(

Their lives are far too short for all the joy and unconditional love they give us.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost our 13 1/2 year old dog, Maggie, 2 weeks ago. She had cancer in her spleen, I was worried her spleen would rupture. We ended up having to put her down also, before her spleen ruptured though. So very sorry for your loss. It's tough I know. My thoughts are with you and your family.

I am so so sorry for your loss. I have a three year old Sheltie and I know the joy they bring. :sad1:
