My dh and I are leaving for disney in 5 days and I have been sick with a virus for the past three days. I have a fever, chills, heachache, throat hurts, etc. Being a daycare teacher makes it hard to stay away from viruses. I want to be feeling 100 % better by the time we leave but I'm starting to doubt that I will. Has anyone else been sick while on a disney vacation? How did it go? Was it miserable and had you wishing you were in your own bed, or was it alright?

We are going in 57 days for our anniversary no kids trip. 25 years for us. We went 5 years ago for our 20th. I got sick 2 days into the trip. Head cold. Eye swollen shut and couldn't wear my contacts. I made the best of it. There were a couple nights I didn't go into the parks and slept. I hadn't taken any medicine with us so paid a fortune for it.

At least you know in advance, and can take all the meds you need with you - I went on a solo trip a few years ago, ended up with a bronchial infection that had started as a tickle in my throat just before I left - only packed Halls and ended up needing antibiotics when I got home - should have checked with the front desk and they would have sent me in a cab to a local clinic but I suffered with cough syrup I bought in the gift shop instead (I am Canadian and didn't know my hubbie's insurance would have covered the clinic visit and antibiotics ahead of time). I spent two nights coughing my lungs out in my room (thank goodness they were my last two), and tried my best not to alarm people on the plane ride home when I had my coughing fits. Not a fun way to spend a vacation, especially with no one around to help me, but at least I wasn't bedridden, still able to go get some food and walk around - just embarrassed by my coughing fits and not able to get my breath, so was more comfortable at my resort than in the parks or restaurants. If you know what you have and are treating it, maybe by the time you go you will be better. If not, at least you will have someone around to help look after you, although it wouldn't be my choice to spend a vacation at Disney that way.

I just came back from Disneyland, where I'd started to come down with a cold on my second to last day there. Here are the things I wish I'd thought to bring:

Medicine: For me, this meant ibuprofen, decongestant, and expectorant. Whatever makes you feel a bit better. There is a chance you won't be able to get it in the park, and if you do, it will be EXPENSIVE. It's easy to pack and if you don't need it, no loss.

Tea and honey: I love Gypsy Cold Care and rooibos tea when I don't feel good. You can make it in your room's coffee maker and have a nice hot cup to soothe the aching throat.

Good tissues: Even the nicest hotels tend to have rough tissues.

Juice: Okay, harder to pack, but if you can make a stop at a grocery store, get yourself some of the good stuff. The juice you find in the park tends to be the kid-friendly variety, which means more water and sugar than juice.

Also, when we're sick, it easy to convince ourselves that we can eat whatever we want. But it's a good idea to remember that good food will make you feel better, and bad food will make you feel worse. Particularly look for fruits and veggies high in vitamin A, and avoid dairy. (That part's hard for me. I LOVE dairy.)

Finally, if you're feeling poorly, take it easy. Spend some time in the park sitting in the shade and people watching. Go to shows. Take a nap if you're really feeling tired. I usually feel better first thing in the morning, but wear out easily. We'd get up for rope drop, have a few hours in the park, then take the middle of the day off. You'll feel better in the long run.

Thanks for all of the advice. We are on the road now and I packed pretty much my entire medicine cabinet. I've been feeling really good for the past two days, except this morning I woke up with pink eye (luckily I packed my leftover drops from the last time i had it). Someone else told me to pack some emergen-c, which ill put in some oj every morning. I love my job as a daycare teacher for one year olds, but I could do without all the sicknesses that come along with it.

Five days is plenty of time to feel better (enough). My must haves (and I've been under the weather at disney), are NyQuil for sleeping. You don't want to be up all night coughing. DayQuil for the daytime. A nasal spray. Hopefully this will keep your nose clear enough to taste your food. Nothing like eating a big ole sundae and realizing you can't taste a darn thing. Take a midday break. Go slower. When I went I had a burning congested chest. It hurt to walk but my love of disney helped distract me. You'll be fine. :)

I had stomach problems (akin to the flu but not contagious), while we were at Disney over New Years this year. We definately had to change how we vacationed, but it was nice to take things slowly. Restaurants were very accommodating to me with just having bread and water...even offering crackers, soup, anything.

Disney also accommodating with reservations. We canceled a few reservations because I was too sick to leave the hotel. I even had to cancel the midnight NYE dessert party because I was too sick. Luckily they gave me full refunds for everything because it was less than 24 hours.

It's not ideal to be sick, but it will give you a different, slower perspective.

DH and I were both sick at Disney one time. We were there a whole week and were basically sick the whole time. We must have looked pitiful. There we were at the happiest place on earth looking miserable. We used a ton of napkins to blow our noses, were run down and headed back to the room by 8:00 some nights, and couldn't taste any of our meals. DH usually brings Alka Seltzer cold medicine but after that trip I NEVER go without lots of tissue packets and Afrin nasal spray!

Being sick and not being home for me is the worst experience ever. That is why I get trip insurance - so I can cancel and stay home and take care of myself. If that is not an option for you bring plenty of meds and Kleenex - and please bring a mask you can get at the drugstore to prevent being the cause of someone else catching your virus! I have my owner's locker at WDW packed with Nyquil, clariton, aleve, and everything else I can think of I might come down with there. My family always makes fun of me but when someone suddenly has heartburn at 3 am I have the medicine for it. I always think better to have too much than not what I need. After scratching my eye there once with my contact and having an eye that watered constantly for two days I even have an eye patch in the locker now.

Rest assured if you are sick while in the area.

There's a service in Orlando called The Medical Concierge that sends board certified doctors directly to your hotel room/private villa. It's awesome because you don't have to wait in a long line at a clinic and it's actually pretty affordable by comparison. It's a shame that not many people know that this even exists as it is a really convenient service.

so how did the trip go?

the only problem I had was flying - being in an airplane with an type of nose/sinus problem can do bad things to your ears.

so don't fly anymore.

I was at the tail end of being sick , the night before we were due to check in to the BC, took a decent amount of cold,flu/allergy medince woke up the next morning feeling better but still had little signs of being sick, luckily i pack plenty of cold medince so i bared through the face i didnt have to buy a $10 bottle of cough syrup

I was starting to get a cold before my 2nd trip to WDW.

The cold wasn't that bad, but I found that it left me unable to cope with the heat (and I was there in the middle of a heat wave).

Be sure to keep hydrated while you're there :)

When I went to Disney with a cold coming on( I asked at the pharmacy before getting on the plane ) what could I do to help me get better quick.
The pharmacist advised me to take EMERGEN-C. IT HAS 1000mg Vitamin C and Zinc. worked LIKE A CHARM. I never go away without it! You do not need a prescription it is over the counter:thumbsup2

I took some Benadryl (that I bought in desperation at Epcot) and ended up falling asleep on Ellen's Energy Adventure. Thank goodness I wasn't alone that trip. I did feel quite better afterwards though and ended up having a great day!
