Sick hamster/Update page 4

He is still very weak and tired. It could be the time of day, partly - he often looks that way during the day but perks up at night. We'll see tonight. He is not in any distress, thankfully. He drank some more Pedialyte. Going to give him water, also, if he'll take it.

Just a quick update. Woody is still with us but obviously ill. I am waiting to speak to the vet. :sad1:

I'm sorry. Poor little guy, my thoughts are with him. Hope he pulls through.

Been thinking about you and the little guy, was afraid quite frankly to read the update Glad he's still with you and still sending prayers his way...so tough I don't care what kind of animal or what size they sure leave their prints all over our hearts don't they ?

Thank you. Yes, they do.

Oh no, I just saw this. I hope the little guy pulls through. Please keep us updated.

For such a little guy he's loved a whole lot :) What a lucky little thing to have such a loving family. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys.

How is Woody doing? I've been thinking about him.

He's still about the same. Appears comfortable, but weak and sleepy most of the time. Still sits with DD in his pineapple while she does her homework. Just a shadow of his former self. Had a discussion with our vet about what we'll do if he appears to be suffering. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for caring. I know they're little, but he always felt like a big part of our family, sitting with us at night and having routines with us, etc. We're all sad he's like he is, but we know he's enjoyed his life with us and he's brought us a lot of laughs, too. Uggh.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I know how hard it is to see them like that, that sounds a lot like how Felix was. Did the vet say what he thought he problem is? Even though he is not really that old for a hamster, maybe he is just be at the end of his natural lifespan. I know he has had a wonderful life with you guys and is very much loved.

I thought it was over last night. Sitting on DD's chest, his favorite place, he looked like he was gone, and even fell over sideways. But then DH came along and held him and he opened his eyes, drank some Pedialyte and water, and ate a blueberry, holding it with his hands and everything.

Watching DH hold him and feed him made me remember when our babies were little, and why I married this man! He's a hulk of a man but like a gentle giant when it comes to animals. And Woody loves him, too. In many ways, Woody was DH's favorite hamster because he always loved to sit with him; they had a thing. There wasn't a dry eye here.

My vet really doesn't care for small animals - we'd have to take Woody to a small animal vet for diagnosis and treatment, and it's just not something I want to do after last time. We discussed euthanization, which he would be able to do for us, if needed. But Woody is clearly not suffering. He actually seems pretty comfortable. If that changes, it's good to know our vet will help.

I think it's probably mostly old age, perhaps with some event or illness that accelerated the process. In retrospect, he was showing signs of aging and slowing down a bit for the past several months. I was thinking about Felix, too. I was surprised, at the time, that his time had come and gone so quickly - I remember when you were getting him! But I guess the sad reality with these guys is that their time really is so limited. We have to enjoy them while they're young.

We're not sure whether we'll be getting another since we now have a young terrier. (And no, he had nothing to do with this!) Part of our enjoyment of having them is letting them hang out with us each evening. I don't think we'll be able to do that with the dog. I'd hoped to train him to accept the hamster as part of our pack (like I did with our Shepherd), but he's so young and energetic, I don't think a hamster would really be safe, at least not for a while. He saw Woody once or twice, and that shrill bark was like, whoa :scared1:

Ah hugs to you all once again and thanks for sharing about DH....big ole guy is a marshmallow mine is too thank God ( which explains all the animals we've had over the decades too )

We are bringing Woody into the vet's today. We think he has gotten to the point where he is uncomfortable.

Thanks, mom. Unfortunately the euthanization process for a hamster is pretty severe. (And I've never had to do it before.) I'm trusting my vet will make it as painless as possible. :guilty:
