Thanks, mom. Unfortunately the euthanization process for a hamster is pretty severe. (And I've never had to do it before.) I'm trusting my vet will make it as painless as possible.

It's going to be a tough day. But you've handled this with compassion. I hope it goes better than you are expecting.

Woody is gone. Thank you for your support and caring. We ended up staying for the procedure. Our vet was great. Everyone we encountered was great. All for a little white hamster. Days like this make me remember how caring people really are, at heart.

Did the vet say what he thought he problem is?

I forgot to say yesterday that at the vet's, once Woody was gone, we could really examine him. It looks as though he had a swelling over by his neck and jaw, the vet thinks it was either a swollen lymph node or a tumor. It explains a lot. (DD had noticed this but we didn't want to hurt him touching it and looking further.) I guess these are fairly common in hamsters, from what I've read.

DD was sad last night missing Woody. She thinks she may want to get another. She feels she can keep one safe in her room, and I agree. The cage we have is a huge converted bird cage that DH and the kids souped up, and it's kept up high on top of a bookcase, doors secured shut. (If I was a hamster, I'd like it in there, lol.) So we shall see. (Stay tuned.)

I think he'd be just fine! We have two cats (3 when my oldest is home from college) and we've not had any problems. Our little guy spends most of his time in my bathroom. I take him downstairs with me when he is in a mellow mood and content to just snuggle in my lap, but otherwise he stays in my bathroom where he can't get into trouble. I'm just too afraid he will get away from me. He has a large cage and I do take him out every night to play so he gets plenty of stimulation and interaction.
