One of my male co-workers has a cold. That's fine. But instead of coughing like a normal person, he lets out this ear ringing BIG cough every 30 seconds. It's pretty annoying. Anyway, a co-worker discreetly left a bag of cough drops on his desk while he was at lunch. He was ticked. Now the poor girl that sits next to him informed him that she is catching his cold. He told her that that was impossible. Now considering that he coughs without covering his mouth and leans over to sneeze without benefit of cover, it's not that impossible.

It's that time of year again...when we all post about inconsiderate sick co-workers. Seriously, I'd ask to move temporarily if I was that girl.

These are the reasons why, if I am really sick or sick loudly, I stay home. I don't think it is fair to your co-workers to spread germs or sound disgusting. He shouldn't even be at work, IMHO.

I would complain to management about this. Sick people (who are contagious) should be home, not at work getting everyone else sick.

You know, this annoys the heck out of me. Every year we see it--some idiot comes to work with a snootful of germs and passes them around. Or some idiot's mom gives them a dose of Motrin and sends their little germ vector on to school. My DH recently had to leave work because his collegue was coughing, had a fever and went about complaining how bad he felt. DH has severe lung/heart disease; a minor cold can put him to bed for 3-4 days. Dh left work that day, preferring to work at home rather than continue to be exposed to illness. and the kicker is, he got sick anyway! He's been out of work for 3 wks due to illness. Grrr....

Management really needs to step in here! That's terrible.

See that's the part I don't understand. We have an option to work from home, so why can't germ man take his laptop and work from there?? Oh wait, he probably doesn't want to get his kid sick for Halloween.

Minkydog, I'm sorry to hear about your dh. I wish I could share your story anonymously with said co-worker.

I hate to even say this, but this is part of the reason I stopped using a daycare center and started using home care. Parents thought nothing of sending an obviously sick, hacking sneezing child in to the center all jacked up on baby tylenol hoping to get a day's work in - and next I knew my son was sick about 15 times and me about 10 the first year he went there.

Unless you absolutely NEED to be at work or school - please stay home. That's what sick days are for - when you're obviously sick.

That made me laugh. At my office it's our boss that gets us all sick. He once had this nasty eye infection and his eyes were actually gooey. He had to have his wife drive him to work one day because he couldn't see well enough to drive. The same day he actually conducted an interview for a new postion. Needless to say, the person didn't take the job.

You just can't stop some people from working.

I would have a can of lysol spraying it all the time!! That's why my behind stays home when I have a bad cold......I may feel well enough to go to work but I know that I can contaminate the office and make others sick!

Me too! I don't go for that martyr trophy--I'll be happy to stay in bed with tea and a heating pad, gulping down Tylenol until I either get well or die. I figure either way, I'm gonna be sick. No need to infect everyone else. If I just give in and let it run it's course, I hope it will be over sooner. Besides, if I get sick who's gonna take care of everything around here :confused3

While I totally agree with staying home if you are sick - I have to stand up for the coughers of the world. I have Reactive Airway Disease/Cough Varient Asthma. So does my Dad, so does my son, so do many other people. What this means is that anytime my airways get inflamed (could be a cold, an infection, or allergies), I cough - and I do it loudly. A cough usually lasts for weeks or months. It's gross, it's awful, but it's my life.

Cough drops do not help this kind of cough. Cough drops are for tickles. If you take a cough drop during a bronchial spasm you risk choking to death.

While obviously I do my best to keep from having this problem, and I most certainly cover my mouth, it would simply not be possible to hold a job and not go when I might cough. Mmm, maybe WELFARE or Disability would be the way to go - I'll never have to work again!

Even for regular people, coughing often lasts way beyond the initial stages of a cold. Obviously, the person in the OP probably needs to use better coughing ettiquete and know when it's bad enough to take sick leave - but a common cold isn't always a reason to skip work. Unfortunately his coworkers probably had his germs before he even became symptomatic.

I totally get that it's gross to be coughed on, but for many people coughing is just part of the package.

I totally agree with all that has been said with this thread, but I have to add something. With me, AFTER I have been sick, I get a horrible dry, hacking cough that usually lasts me 1-2 weeks.

But yes, if you're sick, stay home.

Truthfully, a cough is not a good enough reason to skip work, if I always called off when I had a cough, I would almost never go to work, between just regular coughs and allergies. Even when it isn't that bad, it is a VERY deep hacking cough, and nothing, cough drops or otherwise will help.

I heard it is actually better to cough to the ground, rather than your hands because people arent really touching the ground and if they cough in their hands they could touch a door knob, therefore spreading the virus. :confused3

I went to work, was there for 20 minutes and went home. I'm miserable but I had work to do so I did it from home. No cough, just feeling crummy. Now I'm debating what to do tomorrow.

I get a really bad cough whenever I'm sick due to having bronchial asthma when I was younger. Though I've grown out of it, even the slightest cold will give me that barking and obnoxiously loud cough which seems to scare the hell out of everyone. Thankfully I get sick now maybe once every two years. Maybe he has the same problem, it's really very hard to stop, even with an inhaler.

Not everyone has a job which gives "sick" days. That is why some sick people need to be at work......so they can get paid.

This runs along the same lines as people who travel while they are extremely ill. They don't want to lose their precious vacation, but don't mind getting everyone else sick in the process. I had a lovely lady (at the height of SARS in Toronto) sit in front of me on the airplane with her surgical mask dangling around her neck. She coughed loudly throughout the entire flight and didn't put her mask back on. Needless to say 5 days later I was very ill.

I cannot stand it when people don't cover their mouths when they cough or use a tissue when they sneeze. That is so disgusting! These people have no consideration what so ever for anyone else around them.I don't want them near me at all.Not at work, home or anyplace else for that matter.
Rude slobs....
