Sick and tired of bread prices!

I :love:my bread machine!

After reading this entire thread I ordered a bread machine off of QVC yesterday while they were having their "everything is 4 payments" sale.

I can't wait to get it and start making my own bread - thanks to everyone for all the receipes and where to find more. :)

Got a loaf going right now! :thumbsup2 We will eat it as a snack with butter this afternoon.

I used to love my bread machine, but frankly, I was eating too much bread. DH loves bread, and I was making loaves all the time. I was getting too fat. I am much better off without a bread machine and paying $2/loaf for whole grain/3+gram fiber/no HCFC bread at the gorcery store.

We use our bread machine to make pizza dough at least once a week. My family loves homemade pizza.

I'd love to bake some regular size loaves of bread in the oven but can't seem to find a pan that is the right size. Anyone know where I could find a loaf pan that will enable me to make a loaf of bread that will be about the same size as a loaf of bread you might buy at the store.

Tonight I'm going to try making pita bread!! It's one of the things we always buy at Costco but I bet I can do it at home! Plus, they will be fresh, not those things they freeze, defrost, then sell to you. Can't wait to see how it turns out. :)

I bought 6 great loaf pans from ikea. They work perfect and were very cheap!

I have been making the depression era bread. (cooking with Clara on u tube) It is so easy and the kids love it. I am making more right now and will be freezing it!

I've also been making all of our bread at home since I've been adapting our diet and avoid food colorings, preservatives, etc. I have a teeny house and hated lugging it off the top of my cabinet (best place to store it), but I've finally decided to give it a permanent station on my dryer! The laundry room is right next to the kitchen, and obviously all it does in there is bake and I prep in the kitchen, so its made it so much easier to bake when its always set up waiting to be used.

I've found this site a while ago and always try to make a new creative loaf for my kids - its pretty fun and has TONS of interesting recipes!

Also, for the longest time I couldn't figure out the best way to store my homemade bread. About six months or so ago I finally started investing in the OXO Good Grips containers for snacks and baking items, and they are AMAZING! A bit expensive, but I would by a container or two a paycheck. So worth the money!! The one that holds the 5-pound bag of flour is perfect for holding your bread! I just slice it up and then pop it in there, and its always fresh and waiting for me :)

We have a few of these at the beach house....they are fabulous for keeping any critters out of the food in the pantry! They've also started carrying them at BBB...not so bad in price if you have a coupon too.

Electric knives work really well for cutting home made bread.

Using better flour really makes a difference. Finally tried the King Arthur's Flour that everyone raves about and I was really impressed.

Bread is expensive, I agree. I'm not sure if DH and DS would eat homemade bread though and bread machines are expensive aren't they?

I've bought bread machines twice, and paid $10.00 each time at yard sales. They have been brand new- I guess people get them as gifts and don't want them. I lost the paddle from the first one, so that's why I bought the second. I see them all the time at second hand stores. both machines have made wonderful bread and saved me a lot of money.

There is actually very little involved in running or cleaning it. You dump the stuff in, set the timer and walk away. When it's done all you clean is the pan, whch is teflon and doesn't require much more than a wipe with a damp cloth.

Bread machine bread is far better than storebought but it also spoils faster and costs more to make.

Homemade bread will not spoil as quickly if you use potato water for the water in the recipe. Just save your water when you boil potatoes.

Here it is, a little over a week later, and I've made a loaf of bread a day...so easy and working out great. When we have some leftovers I turn them into croutons for salad. May also try making some bread crumbs too.

It was so fun to go to the store and bypass the expensive bread aisle!!!

I'm "working" from home today due to the snow. Now that I found this thread I have the urge to go bake some bread. I think I'm going to do it right now:wizard: I can't decide to do free form or use my bread machine:confused3 I am thinking of taking out my frustrations about the weather by kneading the dough by hand:goodvibes

Holy cow! You go through a loaf of bread a day???? How many in your household? 10?

For those of you looking for gluten free recipes, check out this web site:

http://www.elanaspantry.com/recipes/

She uses Almond flour. I can attest that the pancakes are really good and a friend swears by the brownie recipe. Almond flour is expensive ( 1 pound = $7), so you may want to shop around for it.

My mom has been making gluten free bread for my dad for years.

She uses a combination of flours (she used to grind her own, but now I'm pretty sure she uses store bought) and makes different mixes to use for pancakes, etc. I'll ask her about it and post back tomorrow.

We're a family of 6, with the oldest away at college. BUT, I have a teenage boy! Plus, everyone has been eating a slice or two of toast for breakfast every day...saving money on cereal too. :cool1:
