Sick and tired of bread prices!

I'm not sure if the price of bread could be different based on your region but for me to buy whole wheat bread with no High Fructose Corn Syrup runs me about $3.50. If I want to buy any type of bread with added grains, oatmeal etc it costs upwards of $4.25. If I want to buy a specialty bread like from Panera I have to tap into the HELOC on my house. :lmao:

I'm with you about Panera and the HELOC but don't have a house or HELOC.
Bread can be expensive stuff.

I like Stop & Shop's "Nature's Promise" bread - it has no HFCS and has a lot of varieties with added grains. I can often get it on sale for $2.00-$2.50 a loaf, which around here is what most of the regular HFCS-laden brands run.

Check out King Arthur Flour's website for tons of recipe ideas and products to make a great loaf of bread (yeast, flours, special ingredients). I received a Zo for Christmas 2009 and love it. I use only KAF flours since they are very good, high gluten and no unnecessary chemicals that are often found in bleached flours.

I also have a great bread machine recipie book that I bought online for 9.99 that is my bread bible. The book is called The Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook by Beth Hensperger.

We use Aunt Millie's Healthy Goodness Potato Bread and we love it. I use coupons on it and can usually get it for under $2 a loaf!

I admire people who have the patience to cook from scratch!! I barely have the patience to cook a microwave dinner ;)

Well thanks to this thread I finally decided to fire up the bread machine my DW's grandfather gave us end of last summer. Used the recipe posted here that started the whole thread. Came out very good. We only had AP flower but it tasted good to me. Didn't rise as much as I thought it would though, is that because of the flower we used. Oh and it turns out the machine her grandfather gave us that was just gathering dust in the basement is a Kojirushi so we scored on that front. I will have to try some more recipes. Thanks again DIS boards for showing me something new to try.:cool1:

I love fresh homemade bread! Unfortunately for me buying a bread machine and making bread on a regular basis would cost more than what I buy now.

I shop at the local Sara Lee Outlet and pay $0.60 for Whole Grain White bread and $0.90 for Wheat. Any of their specialty breads like Rye or 9grain are $1.50 a loaf. Bread is never expired and always tastes fresh. Not the same as homemade but easy on the wallet :)

I received a Zo bread machine Christmas 2008 - and have not bought a loaf of bread since. We make rolls, dinner rolls, pizza dough, bread sticks, wraps, pita pockets, english muffins, bagels. You name it we have tried it. I work outside the home, over 40 hours a week. What's nice about my machine is it has a timer and I can throw the ingredients in the pan and have it start in 10 hours. Since the bread does go stale quickly - we will end up toasting near the end of the loaf. Or even rolls for that matter.

Here is a great white bread that kids love that I found on recipezaar.com

Ingredients
1 cup water (room temp.)
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons margarine
1 tablespoon honey
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup powdered milk
2 teaspoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
Directions
1Add ingredients in order given (this is for my machine, your's maybe different).
2Select dough cycle.
3When done, take out dough and on a floured surface, shape into loaf and place in loaf pan. (I try to work it as little as possible).
4Let rise in a warm place for approximately 40 minutes until doubled in size.
5Bake on centre rack of preheated 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes.
6Cool on wire rack before slicing.

I also agree with the recommendation of the King Arthur's flour website for recipes.

Love this book! I have been working my way through the recipes and so many of them have been good!

I started making my own bread last year. I use my Kitchen Aid. I use the recipe from the book that came with the mixer. It's rather easy, but more time consuming that using a bread machine.

I have a bread machine, but I didn't like the way the bread came out. I tried a bunch of recipes, but they never tasted right. It's going into our yardsale in the spring.

I've also been working my way through this cookbook. Have you found any recipes from it that you particularly like?

Thanks!

I have a bread machine that someone gave me when DH and I got married about 10 years ago. We have never used it. I LOVE bread but DH has been on a low/no carb diet for about 9 years now. It's the one thing that really works for him to maintain his weight.

he will have low carb wraps but doesn't eat chips, sweets etc. Ice cream is his downfall but he eats that in moderation.

I love bread but never buy a whole loaf just for myself as it will go to waste. DD eats bread for sandwiches but only likes potato bread. wonder if i can get potato flour....

I do make everything else from scratch, cookies, brownies, etc.

We love the Hamburger and Hot dog buns on page 92. I had 1/2 whole wheat and make them wheat buns. I make sandwich rolls out of it for the kids, I also make them smaller than she calls for. I have also made most of the simple whole wheat loaves, they are all good.

I have made many of the recipies with good success. So far, my favorites are:

Banana sandwich bread
Scandinavian Rye
Peasant bread - even thought I have a 2lb machine this one gets too big, so i have to make the 1 1/2 lb loaf. My hubby likes rosemary added to this one.
Challah bread - I made the dough in the machine and braided the loaf and baked it in the oven. Amazing! I made Ina Garten's Challah French Toast and it was great.

What a quick easy and super good bread reciepe....

1 can of Beer
3 Tablespoons Sugar
3 Cups Self Raising Flour

Grease Loaf Pan

Cook at 350 for 55 mins

THIS IS SUPER GOOD AND SUPER EASY

Ok, so I read this yesterday and I have never made bread, but I decided that this was too easy to pass up.

Result?

It was great! Thank you so much for passing it along!

I buy that too but it's 2.50-3.00 on sale here and 3.60 if it isn't on sale. I occassionally make my own bread, I use the dough setting on my breadmaker and then bake it in the regular oven. I don't like homemade bread for sandwiches though. I can't get it sliced evenly! I need one of those heavy duty bread slicers like they have at Panera!

Has anyone had success with a sourdough starter? I saw some info on the King Author website but it's not something I've ever tried before.

I used to have that trouble too. I would go through half a loaf trying to get two sandwiches. :rotfl: Now I use a Pampered Chef serrated bread knife and have no problem.....I think practice helped too.

This sounds more my speed! I need to search for an outlet.
