The price just keeps going up! So last night I pulled out my bread machine and found a new and easy recipe on the internet to try. My family ate it for breakfast this morning and every single person (from the little ones to my dh) made a point of saying how tasty they thought it was.

I bought the big 50# bag of bread flour at Costco a while back for around $10 I think. At 3 cups per loaf we'll be eating bread for pennies on the dollar.

Here's the recipe:

1 cup warm water
2 1/4 tsp. yeast
2 TBLS sugar

pour these into bread machine and let sit and foam for 10 minutes

Add:
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3 cups bread flour
1 tsp. salt

I set the machine for a 1.5 pound loaf, medium crust, and started it right away (due to yeast and water already mixing). Turned out great! Next time I'm going to sub in 1/2 cup whole wheat flour for the same amount of bread flour for a little extra crunch (as someone on the website recommended).

FYI: If you're going to be using a lot of yeast, I also saw that Costco has a HUGE jar of yeast for only a few dollars, much cheaper than buying the packets or the little jars at the grocery store.

I don't bake enough to justify a 50# bag of flour or a gi-normous jar of yeast, but even at the higher priced smaller amounts, I figure I still come out ahead, and then my bread/pizza dough/etc. doesn't have all those additives, preservatives, HFCS's and so on.

Thanks for the recipe! I've been wanting to bust out our new bread machine we received as a wedding gift but had yet to find a recommended recipe.

Question for you --- where do you store all of that bread flour? And how? Do you store in separate containers? That seems like it would be a ginormous bag!

I used to make it all the time. It was really good. I like to have it mixed either in my bread machine or my kitchenaid mixer and then bake in the oven. I really wanted some of the narrower bread pans and bake a loaf more like the sandwich style from the store but, I never got around to it.

Bread is expensive, I agree. I'm not sure if DH and DS would eat homemade bread though and bread machines are expensive aren't they?

I don't own a bread machine. I use the nonknead bread recipie. (flour, water, yeast, salt) It rises for two hours and then it sits in your fridge until you roll it up and bake it. So simple and it taste really good. The only thing is this is mainly artsian bread. Not so great for sandwiches, but really good on it's own or with spreads.

Oh, I do buy the bulk yeast! Much cheaper than the packets. I keep it in a plastic container in the fridge...the yeast I have actually had an expiration date of Nov. 2009 but it's still going strong (maybe keeping it in the fridge helps).

I have some large rubbermaid containers and use one to hold some of the flour in the pantry for day to day use. After opening the big bag of flour and filling the container, I rolled it back up tightly and clipped it together with large clips. The bag is on a shelf in a corner of the dining room. I'm also used to buying the big bags of rice and have done it this way for years and never had a problem with bugs or anything as long as the bag was tightly closed up again.

I've had my bread machine for years but it had been mothballed to the back of the cupboard. IIRC, it was around $100. with a coupon from BBB at the time (it's called The Breadman Ultimate). But I just bet one is hanging around on Craigslist just waiting to be found! Good luck.

Bread machines don't have to be expensive or fancy. I have a $50 model from Walmart that makes great bread. As far as whether your family will eat it or not, I suggest you play with recipes to see which ones you prefer. For pizza dough, we like the recipe on hillbillyhousewife.com. She calls it bread machine pizza dough.
The bread recipe I use is actually for sandwich rolls, like hamburger buns. I just make the dough in the machine then let it rise in a bread pan and bake in the oven. Tastes and feels just like store bought bread:

Hope this helps.

Don't know about you guys...but I'm sick & tired of pretty much ALL the prices that just keep rising...

Homemade bread is awesome!! My dad used to make it by hand...we didn't have a bread machine. I have great memories of making bread w/ him. :) And, wow!! It was GOOD!

I haven't done it with flour yet but with the 25lb bag of sugar I store it in a dog food container I found at walmart. It has a snap lid and airtight seal and claims to hold 22 lbs. Because sugar and flour take up less space than dog food, a whole bag fits just fine.

I washed it really good the first time I used it and have never stored pet food in it. I figure it's safer than a rubbermaid container because of the seal and it's actually made to hold a food product.

What a quick easy and super good bread reciepe....

1 can of Beer
3 Tablespoons Sugar
3 Cups Self Raising Flour

Grease Loaf Pan

Cook at 350 for 55 mins

THIS IS SUPER GOOD AND SUPER EASY

My DD and I just made a loaf of bread on Saturday, using a recipe from Allrecipes. It was a bit time-consuming but it tasted better than store-bought bread. We don't eat bread all of the time so I can see us making a loaf or two every few weeks and not needing to buy any bread.

A bread machine is tempting but I really don't have the space right now for another kitchen appliance. And anyway, my DD enjoys punching down and kneading the dough :)

If you make it in a stand mixer, how long to you knead it for? I'd rather use my oven than the machine, but not sure how long to mix it for. Thanks! :)

YUP! I am turning more and more to making things from scratch and just not purchasing premade items.....not healthy for you and costs too much.

I got a Zojirushi bread machine (originally over $180) for $7 at a thrift store! :thumbsup2

Granted, it is an older model....but it works perfectly and for $7 I am not complaining.

To use a Kitchen Aid mixer, mix ingredients for one minute on low, just until they come together. Let rest for 15 minutes in the mixer bowl covered with plastic wrap. Then mix on medium-low for 10 minutes. Turn out dough onto to flour covered counter and hand knead for 5 minutes.

I have been on a bread making kick lately! Got a loaf rising right now.

Fantastic, thanks!

Does anyone have a recipe for wheat bread in the bread machine? My husband and I make bread often and would like a wheat one that can replace the store bread witch we only buy because we have not found a good wheat recipe yet.

Ok I can't find my bread machine (haven't seen it since we moved years ago :confused3 ) but want to make this with dinner tonight. I can use my kitchenaid mixer but how long should I let it cook and at what temp in the oven? Thanks!
