Sick 3 days before trip. What to do?

pneumonia in one lung against an x-pax, steroids and albuterol? It doesn't stand a chance. If you let it sit too long it can become a lot worse and into a nasty brochitis that will bed rid you for a while, but with those treatments, you should be right as rain by the time you fly.

Just remember when you get to the part to take it easy and not run around too much at first like your instincts will tell you. let your husband and kids run to the rides and you catch up with them. They will still be in line, you wont miss anything. but you don't want to cause a resurgence by overdoing it.

Have a great trip and don't worry!

The doctor cleared you to go, so your issue is with your husband...you'll either have to convince him, or do a cancellation or rescheduling. You could reschedule the Disney reservation, but you might have issues with airfare. Maybe tell him you will take it easy, and you'll get out of the rain if it rains.

Ok, this makes me feel a bit better. Feeling hopeless past few days. I have 3 kids 11, 9 and 5. They would be so sad.

With 3 kids who are probably so incredibly excited to go, there's no way on earth I'd postpone unless travelling truly posed a near life and death danger to me or others who may come near me. With the meds you have (I have plenty of experience with pneumonia and bronchitis, as well as the drugs associated), you'll probably be feeling 90% or more by Friday. Heck, if you have Prednisone, you may wind up feeling even better than you did before you got sick. Prednisone is like a short term mini miracle worker...but the side effects if used too long are horrid, awful, terrible.

Assuming you mean Z-pak not X?

Prednisone I presume. That'll fix you right up. Usually they give me quite a boost, and tons of energy too.

Interesting way of spinning "heinous, rampant, awful insomnia"...

If it's bacterial, you will feel so much better with the meds. Bacterial is a quick turnaround, especially since you aren't coughing. Viral pneumonia is a total bit**, but it sounds like you don't have that!

I'd go!!!!!

One would hope that the doctor made VERY sure she was dealing with bacterial, since she was giving the azithromycin!

Then again the urgent care doc I saw when I got very sick didn't check either. Gave me the same combo. No actual diagnosis. I had the exact same symptoms that my out of state family did a week later and they were diagnosed with flu. So...yay urgent care doc giving me antibiotics for a viral problems? In my case knocking down my immune system helped. Sure would have liked to sleep, though, but that prednisone made it impossible.

Speaking of that, since you're temporarily destroying your immune system with the steroids, be very very careful for secondary infections.

I wouldn't cancel. Those meds will knock it right out of you. In 3 days you will feel much better.

Years back I got really sick before our March trip. The doctor said it was viral. I had a HORRIBLE cough, my asthma was acting up, I had sores on my throat. It was AWFUL. I started to feel better and we went. I still had the nasty cough but that Florida air made it so much better. We had a bad NJ winter that year.

Ha ha...yeah, not everybody likes it. I do get a bit wired, but I feel good and I still sleep when I want to. It really does knock out an infection, or fix an aching back. I've only taken it a few times in my life (you really can't take it all the time), but I have had excellent results with it.

I appreciate all the responses. I guess I needed a bit of reassurance. I have never had pneumonia before and just don't quite know what to expect. Dr's don't explain the way I would have hoped and the internet is a scary place to do research. I just know what they gave me to fix it. The prednisone might explain why I couldn't sleep though.

Guess we are going! Kids will be thrilled. I think my DH is just worried for my in the plane, and my energy levels. 4 years ago our whole family got the norovirus while at DW on day 2. Even had to stay in the hospital. It was a bust. I can see why he is concerned. If anything it is an excuse for me to relax and not race around. haha.

I'm also asthmatic, so I know how easy it can be to miss a respiratory illness because you assume it's just asthma flaring up. It's good that you went to the doc and are on the mend.

Like many have said, since your doc sees no problem with you going, I say go and have a blast. But definitely take it a notch or two slower for the first few days of your trip. Add in an extra sit-down meal (or simply take your time over a QS meal), don't rush around, get enough sleep... be gentle with yourself. You don't want to push yourself and start feeling worse at all, let alone at Disney World! :)

Hi Becky
I was diagnosed with pneumonia last June. I had a bit of a cough and was feeling off. Then I started running a temp. At 102.5 I called the Dr and saw her the next morning. A chest Xray confirmed her diagnosis of pneumonia. After 48 hours on meds I stopped running a fever and felt much better. I was cleared to go back to work after running no fever without meds for 24 hours. I was told I was no longer contagious. However, for a full 8-10 days after I would come home from work at 4pm and take a one hour nap. And I never take naps! I was just so wiped out by the end of the day. My advice would be to take the trip, but realize you might need to take extra breaks. Listen to your body.

I got pneumonia AFTER my last trip to Disney last Nov. It was confirmed by x-ray and also in one lung. I had the much of the same prescriptions as you, with the exception of Levaquin instead of the z-pack. I felt better very quickly with the antibiotics and prednisone. I would carry on with the trip. I would also say if you are not feeling better within 48 hours of starting prescribed treatment or if your symptoms worsen during that time to go back to the dr for a re-check. Feel better and have a magical time!

I would go but just be prepared to take it easier. You'll likely be wiped and need an afternoon break to sleep. You might even consider renting a wheelchair to help conserve strength if it gets bad enough.

I have asthma too, which usually outlasts my colds by a week. I know colds are quite a bit different than pneumonia. But after a really miserable redeye flight, the warm humid Florida air really did help a lot. I took things easy the first few days, sleeping in myself and taking awesome afternoon naps, and even floating around on the Typhoon Lagoon lazy rivers. It sounds like you might be just fine.

Just in case you do decide to cancel, you might also want to check to see if your credit card offers any trip cancellation insurance benefits. Many of them don't, but there are some credit cards that will reimburse expenses for some covered reasons. You would need your doctor to attest that you shouldn't travel though... which is different than what you've been told.

I have been feeling off since Friday but attributed it to my asthma flare ups. Yesterday my DH demanded I go to the Dr. just to be sure since things were getting worse. Well thankfully I went.. I was given an Xray and found I have pneumonia in one lung.

I was given xpac, steroids, breathing treatments every 4 hrs. and told to rest. I am listening to that and am already feeling better. I never even had a cough unless taking a deep breath, no sneezing, no fever etc. Just tired and painful breathing. No coughing at all today.

So here is my dilemma,

Disney is in 3 days. I have been cleared by the ER and my family Dr. to be out and about as well as travel by Friday unless I take a turn for the worse. We are flying there. I am on the mend, and told I am not contagious, I have good hygiene and always wash and sanitize our families hands.

DH wants me to cancel the trip. I am against it if I can manage. If the Dr. said no, I would certainly listen but they gave the go ahead.

Thoughts? part of me wonders if we should reschedule now anyway since the whole week looks like rain and high crowds. Just not sure what to do. And if I do cancel, how does that work? Will we lose all our money?

TIA

This is the same situation that happened to us when we went after Thanksgiving. My little one (4 yrs old) has the same thing you do. He was cleared to go as well. He was fine most of the first day... up until dinner at H&V. He was off and not eating (VERY unlike him). Well, let's just say that right before Minnie came over for a Holiday picture, what little dinner he had, and everything he ate all day ended up on his plate.

Fortunately, Disney has a service that will take you to and from the urgent care facility they use- I think it was about a 20 minute ride each way. They took great care of him. Gave him an oral steroid, and told us to keep up the albuterol treatments (we had brought his nebulizer with us). The steroids opened him up and he was fine the next day, and for the rest of the trip. Unfortunately, my wife, was back at the urgent care 2 days later for tonsilitis. She missed our DHS day, but got to see Neil Patrick Harris at AKL when she went down to get some Advil. To top that off, we're pretty sure our older son wasn't feeling 100% for most of the trip.

In any case, you still have time, and from personal experience, the meds you've been taking have been pretty quick to clear up what's ailing you. My advice, take the trip, but be very conscious of not pushing yourself too hard. Pneumonia is tricky. The symptoms can subside very quickly, but too much exertion can very easily cause a relapse.

I would go. Knowing how long my own recovery time is, I'd be booking a scooter, but you have to know your own needs on that front.
