Siberian cats and allergies

Hello,

Does anyone here own a siberian cat? I've been told recently that they are somewhat hypoallergenic, meaning that they carry far less of the protein that usually triggers cat allergies. My parents are really quite allergic to cats and would still like to come over for a visit from time to time. So a cat has always been out of the question until now. I live in an apartment so I can't get a dog but it would be nice to have some sort of pet other than a fish. If you do suffer from cat allergies, has your siberian cat triggered any allergies at all? I'm just wondering if it would still be a problem. As well, I've heard they are very affectionate and like attention, do you find this to be true?

Thanks :)

I have a Siberian, he's the sweetest thing. I also have really bad allergies to cats, to the point where I walk into a house that has cats, and I can't breathe. Never had any problems with my Siberian. He sheds like crazy though, but doesn't produce the dander that most people are allergic to. They're extremely smart, very playful. And they grow to be larger than the average cat. Their fur is silky smooth and so soft, and nope, no allergies. I basically end up nuzzling straight into his fur, and I have no problems.

Just make sure you go with a reputable breeder if the person has bad allergies. You don't want to get a Siberian that was mixed with something else so it might still produce the dander. And if at all possible, have the person with allergies come with you when you visit the breeder to make sure they'll be alright. If you get one, I suggest you buy some stock in those lint roller things, you'll be going throw them like hotcakes,

Yay an answer!,hehe Thanks for the good info. I've been reading that they only shed badly once a year, I guess that ain't so ;) Judging by their long coat, I'm not too surprised. Thanks again :)

I've always heard the same thing about Siamese cats, and it's proven to be true for our family. DH and I are VERY allergic to cats, and so is one of our DDs. Our other DD was given a Siamese kitten for Christmas 6 years ago. We were all very nervous about it, and we've been FINE.

She sleeps with any/all of us -- sometimes right next to my face! -- and we don't have any problems at all.

But if we go to someone's house and there are other cats around, we immediately start sneezing and sniffling and wheezing and itching.
