I called an ad this morning for Siamese kittens. The person told me they were all gone, but there would be another litter in about a month. I asked what color, and she said that she wouldn't know until (at the earliest) they were about 4 weeks old and starting to show their colors. She said you can't breed for color. Is this correct? I love Siamese, and have always had them, but this is the first time I have bought one personally. I don't have a preference for color, so it doesn't matter what she has, I was just wondering...
Thanks!

I'm no expert but I can tell you that our two siamese girls are from the same litter and one is a Seal Point and the other a Blue Point. What the breeder said sounds logical to me.

Gorgeous kitties Virgo10! I would love to have a Siamese again someday. I love how they usually talk constantly. :)

Mine is a big talker! But then again, most of my kitties are. However, Siamese really will carry on a conversation. :chat:

We have a tuxedo cat that tells us long stories sometimes. He has a kink in his tail too so I know that there is Siamese in there somewhere. :teeth:

Yes it's true of all pointed cats, not just Siamese. Himalyians, Siamese and Ragdolls are all pointed cats and they are generally born all white. As they begin to age, their color begins to come out. Usually around 3 weeks or so, a good breeder will be able to tell the color of the kittens. Sometimes a breeder, if they've breed the two parents before, will be able to have an idea of what colors will come out, but if it's a new breeding, it's a complete mystery.

<font color=navy>OMGosh, this post makes me want a Siamese cat so badly! I grew up w/Siamese kitties, and one in particular, Queenie, was so smart. She used to follow me around the neighborhood at my heels, w/o a leash, and would jump in my arms when I whistled. She used to like to ride my shoulder when I walked around the house. She also figured out how to open the cupboard, and would pull out her dry food one at a time. She was the neatest cat - learned how to open one of our windows so she could go to the bathroom outside.

:::sigh::: I still miss her.

Enjoy your cat, Otto's Doll. :)

Thanks, I have always loved Siamese, and look forward to finding the right one for us!

I am a little confused. It is true that "pointed" type cats don't get their colors until around 4 wks, but any breeder would know what lineage the parent cats were and would know what the kittens would look like. I have Sealpoints, the apple headed traditional type, and saw both the parents when I picked up my kittens. The breeds are recognized as different, Sealpoint, Bluepoint, Rosepoint, and Tortiepoint. So unless 2 different points were bred, you ought to be sure of the colors.
Enjoy your Meezers, they make great pets.

We had Siamese cats growing up. I don't remember the mother having her babies but she was a bluepoint and the son we kept was a sealpoint.

Sounds like two different points were bred.

We had a beautiful Lilac Point that I got for Valentines Day 15 years ago, sadly "Jasmine" is no longer with us, but she was a beautiful cat. I know that when we picked her up we didn't realize she was going to be a Lilac Point. My Siamese before that was a Seal Point. My mother has a Seal Point and a Blue Point and they both had the same birth mother. I would really like to get another Siamese, but allergy tests confirm the worst. I'm allergic and I am not going to take shots.

We have a seal point kitty ( some kind of long haired siamese mix, but he looks like a ragdoll).

He keeps getting darker as he gets older. He was very very light when we got him, now he is much deeper and smokier and siamese looking.

My first two were Seal Points, my next was a Tortie Point and my baby now (the sweetest cat in the entire world) is a Blue Point. Smokey sleeps in my arms every night, and is so gentle.

Yes, it's true tha tmost pointed cats true colors can't be told until approx 3 - 4 weeks. Yes, it's true it you breed a seal point with a seal point that most likely you'll get all seal points, but there could be a blue, liliac or tortie gene in there that might come out in any particular litter. We're in the process of getting another Ragdoll, and my breeder just bred two seal point Ragdolls. She had seal point and blue point Ragdolls in this breeding. I guess either one or both of the cats have the blue point gene, but they are both seal point. So, when she breeds these two cats, she sometimes gets some blue points out of it.

I have a 19 year old Siamese named Poopie, we just love her, She is not getting around well to much these days. Vet said she is fine for her age. We got her when she was 7 weeks old. ;)
