Shrinkflation?

I’m not sure why but I’m getting 3 or 4 posts from Daily Hive Vancouver each week for the past several months. It was probably a “Suggested For You” site and I must have liked or commented the first time.

In perusing those posts, I get the feeling that Canada’s Pacific Paradise is full of whiners, nitpickers, and slackers.

:duck:Ha! It’s not called the Left Coast for nothing. (JK)

I’ve been to Vancouver twice and enjoyed it. But it does seem to have a lot of “misfits” who likely migrated from other parts of Canada to “start over.”

I noticed this with my shampoo and conditioner. I buy the family size, which is 30 ounces. The new size is only 22oz! That is one cup of shampoo that is missing, easily a week or more of washes. They still have the gall to call it family size! No. There’s not enough to share any more.

I noticed it with Gatorade recently because I had to buy a bunch to get my kids through the flu. The large bottles are now 28oz rather than 32. They claim its a new bottle design that is "easier to hold." Okay. It's also less product and more expensive.

I bought a package of Hostess cupcakes for kids lunches as a treat. At least 1/3 of each cupcakes is missing.

Female care. Use to be 54, now 48.

Ice cream sandwiches continue to shrink.

Portions in restaurants have always been way to big in this country. Shrinkflation is not such a bad thing in restaurants, but it's a real bummer for grocery and bulk shopping.

I really don’t care about ice cream or OJ packages getting smaller. But 5 oz. tuna cans are a problem. Too much for one sandwich but not quite enough for two.

7 oz. cans are sometimes available but rarely go on sale.

Also 24 oz jars of pasta sauce. Not enough for a full pound box of pasta.

But I like having enough for multiple meals. A local restaurant has a really good carne guisada that I can get another two-three meals out of.

I was thinking about all the food that gets wasted.

So many products are getting downsized now. I can’t think of any that haven’t shrunk in the last couple of years. It has happened for many years but has gotten really noticeable now. The multi pack TP brand I buy has shrunk twice since the pandemic started, the equivalent of a roll each time. And the price has jumped substantially too. The things that get annoy me the most are things like pasta sauce. Manufacturers think shrinking the size vs raising the price won’t make consumers as annoyed. But I’d rather pay a dollar more for the size that will actually feed my family instead of having to pay for 2 new size jars. When a “normal” size jar of sauce barely feeds 2 people, it’s ridiculous.

That's true. And it's only when I'm near home that I'm even able to take the extra food for later. When traveling I generally don't have any way to store/reheat. That just leads to overeating and waste.

It does help keep "official inflation rates" lower so governmental programs gets smaller increases per year.

As an example, dropping a sauce jar from 32oz to 24 oz but keeping its price level is a 25% cut. But for inflation, it's a 0% increase. So, we had no increased costs according to government numbers.

Good point on product costs figuring into inflation rates. But food manufacturers aren’t considering “official inflation rates” when setting their prices or product size. I have 2 immediate family member who are upper management in a food manufacturing plant. Raw materials, packing supplies, labor costs & transportation are figured into the pricing. Government inflation rates aren’t factored in at all.

And don't get me started on all chip bags!
I am actually okay with this one because I am super sensitive to staleness (it's a texture that really bothers me) and bigger bags just get stale and I end up throwing them out still half full. I appreciate the smaller bags.
