Are there showers on the auto train that people in coach seats can use? I called amtrak and it seems like each time I call I get a different answer. The woman who told me there are showers said there is just one shower on the lower level of each car to be shared. She said there is usually a standing line. That doesn't bother me, I just want to be able to take a shower and wash my hair so I can do something with it. Seriously I would have rather driven to DW and been able to shower in the morning at a hotel. I purchased the tickets today. Just to be on the safe side I called just now again to verify that there was indeed a shower, this time they told me no. If there isn't a shower, where are the showers that those staying in roomettes share? Would it be possible to take a quick one in the one they share?

When we took Amtrak to Chicago, I don't remember there being a shower available to non-sleeper car passengers, which is why we splurged for the sleeper car. It surely wasn't for the beds!!! or the in-room toilet! The porters were pretty good about guarding the door to the sleeper car, making sure no one other than sleeper-car passengers gained entry to the car, so I wouldn't count on showering there. Even despite that, there was still a queue for the (cold) shower. Hmmm... don't think we'll be doing that again anytime soon.

I agree with Bicker. Any showers on Amtrak trains are for ONLY sleeping car passengers.

We have traveled on the AutoTrain many times in "coach" and there are no shower facilities available for "coach" passangers. If you are traveling in a "roomette" "bedroom" or Family Bedroom, there is one shower located on the first floor of each car for those whose accommodations are in that particular car. If you are traveling "coach" you are not permitted to enter the part of the train with bedrooms/roomettes. The coach section of the train has its own lounge and diner and the bedroom sections of the train have their own diner and lounge, so the 2 sets of passangers don't "intermingle".

It must have changed alot since I was on it. I was on it once 13 years ago, and we had a bedroom. I was able to go out to coach where my cousins were and spend time with them. It was all one floor and connected back then.

I traveled in coach once on the AutoTrain, right where the coach cars meet the 1st sleeper car. They had a sign in the window of the sleeper car stating that coach people can't go in there. Funny thing is, some sleeper car people were coming into coach and stretching out and chatting. So no one was guarding the "barrier" between coach and sleeper. And I think only once when I was traveling sleeper did I see someone using the shower (on the bottom level near the potties). Usually it was empty.

I get the impression that most sleeper car people on the AutoTrain don't use the shower. You usually get off the train in the late morning, so it's not too long until you are home or in a hotel, depending on where you are going. :)

I suppose it depends on how far you're going. My trip was over 24 hours long, and there are some trips that are far longer. I showered once, and probably would have showered a second time if I was going any further.

You're right about sleeper car folks stretching out in the coach. Some of the rooms in the sleeper cars are pretty cramped. Furthermore, when the room is being cleaned or made-up, there isn't enough room for the passengers to be there, so they would have no other choice than to go to the cafe or coach, whichever was closer.

Hi, Fellow autotrainer....we also live in central Pa in Hollidaysburg, where are you???

Hi AshAlytwins - Not too far from you - on the "north-western" end of Altoona.
I see that you also like cruising. We went on our first Disney Cruise this past October and loved it. DH is ready to go again. We thoroughly enjoy travel on the AutoTrain. We are not "hurry up and get there" people. We enjoy the journey and look it as part of our vacation. We have been privileged enough to meet many interesting people that we never would have met if we weren't on the AutoTrain. And, we are lucky enough to never have had a bad experience on the AutoTrain. Time tables have been off a couple of times, but we were in no hurry so it didn't matter.

Glad to meet you!!!
We don't cruise again until November... :guilty: Do you have kids??

Oh no post #200...is that good thing or bad???

All the showers are in the sleeper section and coach cannot go into the sleeper section. No showers for those in the coach section.

Sorry but showers are only in the First Class part of the train. (but sometimes if you get up really early 5am you usually can use the shower in First Class) :ssst:

AshAlyTwins - I do have "children" but they are 22 and 24 now.

Post 200 can be either good or bad. Good because you probably have learned a lot from these boards, Bad because you probably spend a lot of time here - like me. Wonder how those 1500 post people feel?! :goodvibes
