Shower gift- how much do you spend?

most people around here(people who attended our wedding and weddings we've attended) spend between $20-$50 for a shower gift and about the same for a wedding gift. Unless you are the parent or grandparent of the bride/groom I don't know anyone who usually spends much more than that amount. Or else everyone in the world we know is really cheap, but most people don't even register for many really expensive items(ie stuff that is $75 and over)

That is about the norm around here too. I am always surprised on these threads how much people spend on wedding/shower/baby/graduation presents around the country.

Showers; weddings; birthdays; graduations; - whatever - I spend what I can comfortably afford - end of story..

Drives me nuts when people talk about "the going rate"..:sad2:

So, if you can "afford" to spend $1000 should you? I think a "going rate" is very appropriate when it comes to gift giving.

Shower gift - place setting of fine china - $100-$250 or so
Wedding gift - cash of $300-$600 depending on relationship, location etc.

But if the "going rate" in your area is $250 and you cant afford that-should you then skip the wedding/shower?:confused3

Spend what you can spend.

My most treasured shower gifts were the handmade items my poor as churchmice old Aunties made me:love:

No you should not skip nor should you spend more than you can afford but since the "norm" is so different across the country it is nice to know what is the norm.

I honestly do not care what the norm is. I spend what I feel I can afford to spend.

Exactly..;)

If I could "afford" to spend $20 on a gift, and I felt like it, that's what I would spend..

I don't base my spending habits on what other people choose to spend or what the "going rate" is..:goodvibes

Depending on who the shower is for. I spend $50 average for non family/non-close friends. I spend around $100 on close friends and more on my sisters.

Some of these affairs are just out of control after the shower, parties, wedding and any other excuse for a gift they can find. I spend what I can and what I want.
