Hey everyone! I'm just getting all excited about the possible first purchase of a ball python (love love love them, though I'm hoping for a bumblebee or other bright spider morph. We'll see what comes up at the next reptile show), and I wanted to see how many Disers currently keep snakes, of any kind.

So here's your chance to show off your own fine examples of this amazing but unfortunately maligned suborder of reptiles!

My daughter has a ball python. I think it's pretty but I haven't taken a picture of it yet. I don't mind holding it but I refuse to feed it. She has to do that.

We kept it simple, cornsnake. I have nothing to do with it unless I happen to notice it doesn't have water, then I'll pour some in its water bowl. The rest of his care is left to DD10. She loves him and takes good care of him. I, also, buy frozen mice for it when it runs out. Ew

I'll ask DH where the pictures of the snake are and post them later.

Well, it's not really a pet, and it's not really a snake, but... :rolleyes1

What did you think I meant? :scared1:

I have a 15ft red tail boa, that about 20 years old. She weights about 150 lbs or more. Close your eyes if you dont want to read the next part.
Since she is so big she only eats live 15 lb bunnies about 4 times a year. I have tried to feed her frozen one but no way, she wont have no part of it.

Its hard to tell when she is hungry. So when she sees a cardboard box she, starts to bang the glass. *L* And if the poor cat walks by the glass cage she strikes the glass also.:confused3

I dont let her roam free around the house cause of the cat.. :rotfl:

When I have a couple of guys over. We throw her in the tub, which she loves. Ever try to get a snake that weights that much out of water, when they dont want to leave. :rotfl: We end up having a bath too.. :rotfl:

If you have other reptiles make sure you wash your hands before touching another one. * holds up finger* they will think you are food.. :scared1:

Will try to get a picture for you.

I had pet snakes when I was a kid, I think I got my first one at about 4 or 5. When I joined the military, I gave away my redtail to a good friend of mine who still has her! She is now used in programs to educate kids about snakes. I want to get another snake eventually, but since we'll be in base housing sometime soon it'll have to wait.

We've had quite a variety of pet snakes over the years including a Columbian Boa and a Ball Python. They both loved, loved, loved being in the bathtub with nice warm water. We've also had many snakes from the United States and currently have a corn snake. The most we had at one time were five, so not a lot, but, now, just the one. I don't have any pictures to download though - they are all developed, not digital. Sorry. But each snake was beautiful.

I came THIS CLOSE to posting a picture of a poisonous coral snake we killed in our yard a coupla years ago...but I refrained. ;) :rotfl:

Haha. He's adorable! A beautiful moray. What type is he? I always had a secret wish to get a snowflake moray once I got into saltwater.

Wow, that's the biggest red tail I've ever heard of! And a record breaker. Currently the longest red tail I've heard of is the 14.5 footer in the san diego zoo! Pictures are a must now!

But do you really feed her only four times a year? Perhaps feeding her smaller animals more frequently might help stop her from striking at the glass.

Aww, that's great she is being used to educate kids. Though I work mostly in aquariums, I do help out in reptiles when they need me, and I love taking the snakes out. It's amazing how quickly people go from hating snakes to loving them once they handle them and realize how great they are!

we no longer have any snakes. but we have had many over the years. boas, reticulated pythons, rat snakes. we raised corn snakes for a while.(it was very exciting when the eggs hatched!)the snakes who were a bit "mean" were the one everyone is "not" afraid of , garter snakes. the corn snakes were very easy to handle, as were the boas.
I brought some of the sankes to my sons's schools, the kids (and the teachers" LOVED it!
OP, have you ever had a ball python? we tried it twice. they are known to be "poor eaters'.. we had trouble getting either one to eat.

why did I open this thread & read it just before I go to bed? I just know I am going to have a nightmare of a 15 ft snake eating the Easter bunny!

XD All garters have ever done to me is musked at me a bit! Still not so fun.

While I've not owned one, I have taken care of a few (at the store) and while the young ones can be a bit difficult, the majority will take live pretty reliably, then can be weaned onto frozen/thawed from there. Also, that's the reason I'm waiting for the fall reptile show to pick one up (I'm going to the spring, but just to look). All of the breeders that attend are very reputable and I should be request feeding records.

Though there is an amazing orange ghost at work who is eating f/t like a champ. Unfortunately for me to be able to take him home he would have to still be there this fall. :P Still a far way off, but lots of time to get my tank all ready and perfect the heating/humidity! :thumbsup2

You are right about the poor eaters..We thought he was sick or something so we asked everyone we knew but they said they are just poor eaters. he finally ate about a week or so ago.

We have a ball python and a corn snake and they are still small right now. they are easy to handle. however the corn snake thought I was food one day. i washed my hands after eating but some (I don;t know how) I still had chicken smell on my arm...I don;t know if I have any pics.
