I'm leaving in a week   for WDW and I'd like to try and get a few "In Motion" shots!

Please tell how you did it and leave the exif info if possible!

TIA!!

Motion shots obviously require longer shutter speeds. Longer shutter speeds let in more light during bright daylight and tend to washout everything. Best bet if you want to deliberately take daytime motion shots is to invest in a Neutral Density (ND) filter. You can fudge a littler here and there without one during daylight, but you will get much better results with the ND, especially if the sky is bright.

As mentioned above...shots that experience motion blur either have to be very fast moving objects which you track (not very many of those at Disney) or slower shutter speeds which during daytime will usually mean ND filters needed. Now if you just wanted shots of things in motion which were frozen at capture, like a roller coaster, eg:

Those don't have motion blur, but are 'action' shots, and are fairly easy to take - just go with fast shutters.

If it's motion blur you're looking for in daytime...those are great fun if you've got a fast enough subject or a dark enough filter. All of these motion blur shots were taken with the assistance of a 9-stop ND400 filter:

All of these required shutter speeds of 4 - 30 seconds or so, and most on a tripod (or level surface). The only two that were handheld are the Tomorrowland Speedway car and the TTA shot.

Awesome shots zackiedawg! I've seen most of them before in other threads but hadn't commented on them yet.

Just added a Hoya ND400 filter to my ever-growing wish list.

Justin definitely has you covered with some good info. I'd like to throw in one that I took last year at DL. The EXIF is below but I also used a Cokin Z-Pro Filter Holder mounted on the lens. The filter holder allows you to use just one or actually stack multiple 4x5" filters to achieve the best effect. The filter inserted was a 4x5" Hi-Tech .6 GND. Unlike a neutral density filter being a solid shade across the entire filter, the GND is graduated with the darker half being on the top and fading to clear at the bottom. This was still shot in aperture priority and I cheated some using a setting of f/22 to reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor. Typically in the daytime, I wouldn't go that high on the aperture. Also make sure your ISO is set as low as it will go. I had my tripod stashed in a locker for the night shots later that evening so I just used an available railing to help stabilize the camera. Also, in this instance, I didn't want so much blur as to make the monorail too unrecognizable. :)

Nikon D300
Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 @ 24mm
ISO 100
Aperture f/22
Shutter 1/5 sec.

Thanks Todd.

And that's a great shot, Danny. I Need to try that too - my version of the monorail was just a bit too blurred, so I need to dial the shutter speed up a bit next time.

I do have a Neutral Density Filter, will have to throw it in my park bag.

Thanks for the examples! I've not tried this during the daytime so I'll definitely take the time to try it in a few days!

Really, really nice Danny :thumbsup2

Thanks Todd.:)

Thanks, Justin. Nothing at all wrong with yours. Blurring the monorail to any degree looks pretty cool to me. ;)
