Show me (or tell me) about your pin collection

Do you have a pin collection?
yes!

How did you get started in pin trading?
I first started in 2000 with a few pins I liked and a millennium pin my grandma bought for me I was 5 at the time we went

Do you collect just one type of pin or different kinds of pins?
Different I just trade what ever i think looks cool with what ever I have that my least favorite I do try and find all of sets though

Do you buy 2 of each pin in order to keep one or do you just buy to trade?
I usually buy mine on ebay but you have to be careful if you do that to not get scrappers
Is this a fun adult activity too?
Well being an adult legally in a month from today I will say yes my dad really enjoys doing it too he is more into than anyone in my family

I collect mainly (99%) villains - any of them and all of them. I have collected so many over years I have a small shopping bag full. I have tried to come up with an idea of what to do with them. An idea I got was to make a background - either cross stitch or drawn - maybe just the word VILLAINS in Disney script - and then cover the rest of the background with the pins. This would all be then framed. In my mind it looks so awesome! :goodvibes If I ever get it done, I will post it for bragging purposes.

You could place the pins in such a way on the background that they spell out the word 'villains' instead of putting them in the background.

How do you get them so straight??

Wow! I love all the beautiful and creative displays you have! Mine are sitting in binders-- I have two at the moment. One has baseball card pages, and I put the pins that are on cards in those to protect them. The other, non-carded pins are in a binder I put together myself -- got a zip binder, several sheets of fun foam, and sheets of felt. Poked holes in the foam and felt, put the pins on the foam, and put the felt in between the foam sheets. Works pretty well.

I used to have many more pins than I do now -- at one point, I thought I was done collecting, and needed the money more, so I sold a LOT of pins on ebay. Now I wish I had many of those back! I got back into pin trading on the trip I just got back from.

Generally, I collect almost anything with Mickey, some with Minnie (especially if there is a matching Mickey), some from attractions/resorts/restaurants we've been to, and on the last trip, I started collecting the Vinylmation pins. We're hoping to go back next spring, and I'll continue then!

We started trading when my son was young as speech therapy. If you don't talk its hard to trade. It was a good therapy and worked. However, what a monster we created. very expensive hobby. Yes they do fall off. Buy the special backs. DD still trades son not so much. She only collects stitch. If I added up all the pins she owns I am afraid of the total. It is fun and we spend alot of time talking to cast members which is cool. We met the pin man who is covered with pins and said everyone there knows him. I am sure he is correct as he is very hard to miss. We met the Disney pin man as well who is a cast member. All the years we have gone only seen him once. I agree with the poster it is expensive and make sure you want to spend the money it is one of those hobbies that can be addicting as the pins are everywhere.

I started collecting pins a few years ago..I think 2008. I have a lot now and they're all in the black bag with dividers that Disney sells. Not too practical when I just want to look through them. I love the cork board idea and I'll definitely get one to display my pins.

I'm curious about this.

Do you have a pin collection? I would love to see some pictures!

How did you get started in pin trading?

Do you collect just one type of pin or different kinds of pins?

Do you buy 2 of each pin in order to keep one or do you just buy to trade?

I'm thinking of pin trading during our September trip. Is this a fun adult activity too?

I started one with/for my DS 3. Our first trip was this Feb and I had started buy buying some pins from the Disney Store that would reflect our trip (resort, the parks, etc) and I bought 2 of each so he could trade yet keep one. Once we got to the parks I bought him single ones to keep in his collection and packs of ones to trade (a bit cheaper that way). Also bought the storage books/bags when we got to the park after realizing how much he accumulated in just 7 days! I had fun with it but I think it was more my excitement in seeing him make his own decisions, which pins he wanted to trade with CMs or other people! Keeping the "keepers" separate was key for us (they didn't stay on his lanyard if we wanted to keep em). And yeh we bought A TON during our 1st stay...oh boy oh boy!

I don't have pics taken of them, but we wound up with a variety from the resort ones, park specific, favorite characters, sets, special CM ones (or at least that is what I think the ones with the tiny Mickey heads are), things like my 1st trip, and the year pins. Like I said we have the book/bags to keep em in, great to see them all (and ooops got a couple of duplicates but now we can trade em in Dec!). This next trip in Dec we'll get some DVC pins (our 1st DVC stay) and new resort pins and probably some Christmas stuff for special things. We love getting the sets of things like Tink for him to trade only because well he doesn't really care about getting rid of them where as when you have something like Nemo well it is kind of rough getting a 3yo to give up a Nemo pin hahaha.

I'll try to get pics of our collection so far but I can't wait to see others!

I LOVE collecting pins :lovestruc I can't wait to bring my lanyard to Disney this summer to start trading for the first time...my sister not so much  I have to admit im 25 so im not a "youngster" trading. My sister said if I wear my lanyard she'll be embarrassed :scared1: ....so I guess she's going to feel embarrassed throughout our whole trip :lmao: :rotfl2: I started collecting on my very first trip to Disney World in 2004 when I was 14. I don't have a specific theme, I just pick pins that I fall in love with. Although I'm a sucker for pins with Mr. Walt Disney himself on them. I don't have a huge collection at all. I think I might have close to 15. I'll take pictures of them and post them in a little while.

How did you get started in pin trading?
We started doing this on our last trip.

Do you collect just one type of pin or different kinds of pins?
We both collected different types of pins. I preferred ride pins, villain pins and princess pins. I tried to complete full sets and was actually quite successful. My sister collected Stitch, the Fab 5, Chip and Dale and Tinkerbell.

Do you buy 2 of each pin in order to keep one or do you just buy to trade?
No. We bought pins to keep and we also bought sets to trade. As we were only after certain pins, we generally bought pins we didn't want. My sister bought a POTC pin set but only wanted to keep Jack Sparrow. She traded the rest. We don't wear lanyards but we keep the pins in a snap lock bag in our bags to trade.

Is this a fun adult activity too?
We both absolutely loved it and we're adults. We will definitely be doing it on our next trip.

We have 8 display cases of pins in our Disney room at home. We have been collecting pins for years. We collect all types of pins rides, limited edition, etc.

Interesting thread. So my question is - does anyone start pin trading and not get obsessesed?

DS9 was oblivious until recently. But he's started to ask. And I was already planning to start him on it. We're taking the in-laws for their first time this trip. Both my son and FIL are big collectors (coins and Pokemon cards, respectively). So I thought pin trading would be fun for them to learn together.

But now I'm getting nervous. ;)

That's a good suggestion - I have so many projects in the works, but now am getting excited to start another!

Forgot to mention -- for displaying pins -- at Mouse Gears, they were showing some framed pin collections where there was a large reverse cutout -- of the castle, Mickey ears, and at least one other (so the castle was cutout and empty), with pins dropped or arranged into the cutout. These were probably 12x12" or larger, and you could buy the cutouts. They were very interesting! Now I wish I had bought the Mickey ears one, thinking about it, since I collect Mickey pins.

Do you have a pin collection?

Yes. A very small one, by this thread's standards. :lmao:

How did you get started in pin trading?

I got a dozen or so pins for middle daughter to trade the first time we ded WDW, then when they arrived I decided I'd keep some of them. :rolleyes1 I did replace them with some from the Disney outlet store once we got to Orlando, so she still had some to trade.

Do you collect just one type of pin or different kinds of pins?

I collect one pin per ride I like, resort pins, castle pins (mostly Cinderella's at MK but sometimes other castle pins I particularly like), a couple of Princess series (not always official -- I like the rose heart ones that are by no means supposed to be a collection), monorail pins, and I get the Tinkerbell and Cinderella castle pins with the year on them for every time we go but not otherwise.

I originally started out doing "just" castles and keep trying to limit myself to this or that to keep the collector's drive in check, but... yeah. :p I also have a couple of classic-looking Mickey pins that I particularly liked for one reason or another, but for the most part I don't have any of the characters except Tink castles and the occasional princess -- don't get ride or resort pins with any of the characters on them, for instance, which really limits choices there (the door hanger resort series is calling my name, though...). I do seasonal Chip and Dale pins (the only ones with dates aside from my visit castles), and did break my own resort rule once on a Poly pin with Chip. Half the fun of making up stupid rules is breaking them, right? ;)

Hardly ever wear them, because I'm afraid of losing one. I'm more likely to wear a "stray" like the Mickey pins or my Mickey-bar-eating Storm Trooper than I am one from a series or group.

Do you buy 2 of each pin in order to keep one or do you just buy to trade?

No. I don't trade unless one of the kids trades for something I want, then I trade with them. :rotfl: Mostly I just buy the pins I want.

For people who just like trading with CMs and buy the cheapo pins on eBay, it's no biggie.

For people who actually like the dumb pins and collect...it gets very expensive, very quickly.

I'm literally ashamed of what I've spent on pins...but like an alcoholic, the shame doesn't stop me. I keep buying more. Cut way back, but...I can't stop! They're so cute!

It may not be in the DSM, but...I'm a pinaholic.

Thank God in His heave, the Vinylmation things are taking over. I don't like them. :)
