Shoulder Surgery

Hi All,

I wanted to surprise my husband with a first Disney trip at the end of August for our anniversary (actually things are booked already). He is now having shoulder surgery to repair a subluxated shoulder (not a full dislocation, it just pops out during certain activities) on August 8 (about 3 weeks before we are scheduled to leave). I hadn't quite realized how serious this surgery could be, and now thinking whether or not to cancel the trip (we won't be able to go until next year if we do).

I know several people have visited Disney soon after the surgery, and I am looking for any insight you can provide. Of course everything is subjective, but any information may help me decide.

I am definitely prepared to take it easy, and slow down. We don't have to see everything. It will be just the two of us going. Do you think it's doable?

Thanks!

My DH had this same surgery and it does have quite a bit of recovery, as well as PT. I know DH did alot of the exercises at home; I guess I would recommend talking to his surgeon and his PT about it. I imagine at the very least if you went, I would avoid more of the "jerky" rides, such as Dinosaur and Space Mountain.

Thank you for the quick reply!

We are definitely going to talk to the surgeon, and worst case can always cancel right before we go since we'll be able to see how he is feeling.

Even if we can just make it to California Grill and watch the fireworks from the balcony I will be happy :)

I had my first shoulder surgery in 2000, and still dealing with issues today. With that said, I agree with Dinosaur being avoided. Such a jerky ride, that even if you just grip wrong, it will vibrate your whole arm.

Roller coasters, I usually have no issue with. It is random, depending on the type of day he is having with his shoulder. I have been on Space Mountain I don't know how many times and been fine, but a week ago, it was so jerky and rough my shoulder was killing me after.

Also with me, Mission:Space Orange is a no go. The harness comes down and over which is fine for Green side, but with the g-forces you feel on the Orange side, too much pressure gets put into my shoulder area.

I know I am all over the place, but I hope it helps.

Thank you so much, Chim. Sorry to hear about the shoulder issues, but grateful for the tips.

Really glad I started looking into this before our trip. Just spoke to my hubby again, and he is considering a second opinion to have a less invasive arthroscopic (instead of open) shoulder surgery, which means it may be rescheduled until after we come back. Don't know why he only thought of doing this after my gentle prodding regarding the exact type of surgery he was supposed to have. Ah men :rolleyes2

DD had arthroscopic shoulder surgery due to frequent dislocations. She was in an immobilizer for several weeks before she could even begin PT. I asked her you question. She said she would have been miserable at WDW at that point.

Thank you CPT, i didn't realize how long it take to get over this surgery (i know, silly me). Luckily, he will be rescheduling it since his surgeon does not do arthroscopic, so it will likely be after we come back! :cool1:
