Should women have to sign up for a draft at 18 like men do?

Should women have to sign up to be drafted at the age of 18, as men do?

  • Yes, women should have to sign up to be drafted, just as men do.

  • No, I do not support this action, and/or I don't think we're ready to see women coming home in body

Do you believe that women should have to sign up with Selective Service when they reach the age of 18? I'm hoping that this thread is not turned into a debate. For those who wish to debate this subject, you can join us here http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=594308 to voice your opinion further. This poll is to try and get a feel for how many would support this action as well as to see how many would oppose it. If you wish to state your reasons why you believe as you do, feel free to do so. I hope people don't try to debate your point. As stated, for those who wish to voice opposition to whatever stance someone takes, please take that issue up on the other thread. I don't want to discourage anyone from voicing their opinion here.

I would also like to know for those who do reply with a statement, if you feel your stance has anything at all do with women's rights or obligations to serve and protect the country, or if you feel women's rights are an entirely different issue.

Please vote, even if you do not respond with a statement!

Have a great evening everyone! :)

I wasn't going to vote, but I had to so I could see the results. I do not believe women should have to sign up and I do not believe this country is ready to see our moms, wives, sisters, grand daughters, nieces and friends coming home in body bags. In all honesty, I don't like the draft at all!

I also do not believe my view does anything to knock women's lib back at all.

Yes, I believe that women should have to register for the draft. And I believe it has everything to do with equal rights. With rights come responsibilities, and if women aren't willing to fight for those rights, I question whether or not we should have them.

I do not believe this country is ready to see our moms, wives, sisters, grand daughters, nieces and friends coming home in body bags.

This is already happening, and the country is handling it just fine.

As painful as it is, yes, they should. Women have screamed for equal rights in this country for a long time, and you simply can't have it both ways.

I am not handling any of this JUST FINE.

I remember protesting the draft before anyone would've considered me for anything... fourteen and screaming "heck no we won't go!" and hopefully there will not be another one.

I hate the idea of war, will always hate it and will die hating it. There could be a million "sensible" reasonings for it but I will always detest anything about it.

As for women being drafted, I don't want PEOPLE drafted.

Off my soapbox.... :teeth:

I agree with AFR. and I don't think anyone actually wants a draft.

I don't like war and I don't like the possibility of a draft, either, but that wasn't the question posed by the OP. The question was whether or not women should be required to register like men are already required to do.

I stand with Robinrs.

Thereby making two people that completely avoid the question.

I don't know of ANYONE that wants a draft, but that isn't the question. The question is IF a draft were instituted, should women be included or excluded.

Yes. Equal rights means everything is equal. If an 18 year old female is strong enough and able bodied enough to join the army , she should be made to sign up for the draft.

I don't like to see war or see the draft. But if the need arises for the draft then women should be drafted also.

As I said in another post.

I don't think there should be a draft unless it is absolutely, absolutely necessary.

I do think both men and women should be subject to the draft though.

I also think that women should start having to register now. We've had the registration since the early 80's for the men. It's about time women had to register as well.

I still hope we never have to use the draft though.

Edited to correct a typo.

Women are serving now and should be signing up. If we
had a responsible government, there would be no worry
about WHO was serving in our armed forces.

I say "no". I think women should do their part as American citizens with rights and responsibilities. But I also think it is harder for the men in the military to defend our country when women are in combat. Men find it hard to be objective and protect the rest of the platoon when something has happened, or may happen, to one of the women in the platoon. Women evoke the emotional side of men (which CAN be a good thing!), which is something they are trained NOT to be in the military. Not being a man, myself, and not being in the military, I am not speaking from experience. I only speak about what I've been told by other men, some in the military, some not. If any military men want to give their opinion, I would love to hear it. Also (and I hope this doesn't cause a big debate) I don't think the majority of women are as physically strong as men. Even with training and physical exercise, MOST women cannot do what men can do physically. This is not meant as a put down to women. I KNOW there are some very strong women in the USA, but I am saying that MOST women are not as strong. Just remember this is my OPINION only. I don't have statistics to back it up. :D

I'm sorry, but what does this even mean? "If we had a responsible government..." Or are you implying that with a "responsible government" we would never go to war?

I actually voted yes! I have 3 DD's one of them will be 18 in 2 years. I am npt opposed to war..it is sometimes a necessary evil. I do not believe in the draft, an all volunteer military has been working just fine. BUT if a draft were reinstated then all 18 year olds should have to register.

I really understand that we all have very strong opinions on this issue, but by trying to debate what someone else has said, IMO and that may not mean much, I really feel we are chasing people away who might respond otherwise. There is another thread for anyone who wishes to debate!!
