Should we talk about Bruno?

Encanto I've heard of. Didn't see it. Got about 30 seconds into the song and didn't recognize it. I listen to Top 40 radio, but it didn't ring any bells. Still don't know what DVC has to do with anything.

I figured it was originally posted in one of the DVC forums and the mods moved it here.

Encanto. It's the latest animated movie on Disney+. I honestly don't know if it was even released in theaters. No spoilers but as far as I'm concerned, they'd all be better off talking to Bruno than about Bruno. :sad2:

Yes! I saw Encanto in theaters Thanksgiving weekend. I come from a family with a matriarch like the grandmother. And I'm Bruno. I spend every family gathering being ignored. This whole Bruno thing isn't cute or funny when you ARE Bruno.

Just saw it recently on D+ and enjoyed it. I like Isabella's song the best, but the Bruno one is definitely a hit.

If you can't get enough Encanto, the Super Carlin Brothers channel on YouTube has some theory and Easter egg videos as well.

I never for one moment thought of Alma/Abuela as a villain. I am not putting anyone else's viewpoint down but I am simply dumbfounded by the differences in outlook. Which sounds like a put down - as I type it. I mean it is a curiosity to ponder.

I simply saw her as a flawed human being. To me, there is a marked difference.

Yes b/c she redeems herself in the end. She’s more of a villain who accidentally becomes one b/c of the pressure she was under. I know it’s just a Disney movie, but talk about privilege to not be able to be yourself in her shoes. When it’s brought to her attention what she has done & how she has been, she realizes she has to change.

CAUTION - SPOILER ALERT

And she was doing it out of fear and concern for her family and community. She lived through war, her husband getting hacked to pieces in front of her eyes, and then rescued by a miracle which gave her family the ability to help her community, and provide them a valued position in that community. Then that miracle seemed to desert the family, and M seemed to be the focal point of that failure, and the possible end to the miracle. And people are simplifying it to “she’s the villain” 😳

I have relatives who have lived through war like that - I’m willing to cut them a lot of slack when it comes to their ingrained behaviors and reactions. Some people have commented about making excuses for an abuser, but I agree - it’s about being able to walk in someone else’s shoes, so you don’t just blame, but understand instead.

But here's the thing for me - even if she did not redeem herself or try to change, I would feel exactly the same. Simply a flawed human being - some to due to her past in hardly a conscious manner as WAstateDVCDaddy expanded on, some just straight personality and some very unfortunate conscious choices - but not a villain.

And to be honest her seeing her ways and noting that she was wrong was one Disney-like magic.
Because personalities like Alma very rarely ever admit they are wrong. They will fight that like no tomorrow, with sword in hand.
