Should we take Amtrak or Drive With Kids in December?!?!

We are trying to decide whether we should take Amtrak out of South Carolina to Orlando or just drive down since we have two kids, DD11 and DS5. We would love them to have the experience of riding the train, but we are worried about long delays. If we take the train we would leave on December 16 at 3:28AM and would arrive in Orlando at 12:55PM the same day. We have tickets for MVMCP for that night and don't want to blow our chances of missing this!!!
If we drive we would have to leave the day before and spend the night going and coming back-I have back issues that prevent me from driving more than 4or 5 hours in one day.
Our tickets would only be $308 roundtrip for the four of us which is a really good deal!
I'm also continuing to watch airlines too! Spirit gives the best deal, but considering the strike that just happened I'm hesitant to go that route either.
What would you do?????

We are taking the Auto Train this year. We have done this previously, and when I told my (now grown) daughter that we were taking the train, she was truly excited. She remembered how much of an adventure it was to travel the train. Your kids will love it. For the price, I would definitely go by train for the kids' sake.

Thanks for your advice!!! I am such a control freak!!! I know if I drive I'm in charge-my DH never drives, besides I love too!!! With the train I know the control is taken out of my hands!!!! Decisions, decisions, decisions!!!!!

I think you idea it right with taking the train.

It won't be fun to leave in the middle of the night but will save leaving a day early.


Will you need a car at WDW? If not take the train.
