The news has completely floored me. I'm angry, I'm sad, so disappointed, not to mention stressed out. I have two children with a variety of special needs, that just absolutely can't handle intense crowds (shoulder to shoulder crowds are a no no) and waiting in line much past 20-30 minutes is also out. We specifically chose September because it was the cheapest, and also typically has the lowest crowds and because SWGE wouldn't be open. We were booked September 12-17 at All Star Movies. This is an extremely uber budget trip, and we only have 3 days in park, plus MNSSHP, so not very much time. It was/is important to not waste most of it dealing with crowds/lines.

So now I find myself at a complete loss what to do. If we go at the same time, we'll have to skip HS, and that will crush my kids, they love that park. And I hate the idea of thousands of dollars and flying almost 2000 miles, to have to skip a favorite park. So, I'm thinking of rescheduling, but to when?

I'm thinking sometime between May and August would be best, but we'll have to stay off-site now, instead of on due to the increased cost, which is a bit disappointing. But, on the plus side, we're looking at Celebration Suites which actually has a really good shuttle service (4x each, coming and going), we can take in the Old Town Car Show since it will be next door (my son loves) cars, and this will actually work out to be less money since we can get an awesome deal on Frontier flights. Between the flight sale and staying off site we'll save enough money that we can book a character meal or two.

We could post pone until January or February. My guess is we'll still have to stay off site due to the ticket and room price increases we know are coming. Bonus is the weather will be much nicer (I would vastly prefer 60s to 90s! lol). But my worries are: 1. Will the crowds still be so bad that we'll still have to skip HS? If so, we haven't gained anything. 2. We're coming from Canada, and there is a very high chance that our travel plans could get derailed by winter storms. My travel partners don't have much flexibility in their plans to cope with delays.

Or, we can still go, and just skip HS, and basically do the party, then spend our 3 days doing MK, and 2 days at AK. On one hand this would be good. We still get to stay on site and still get to do the party (which my kids really wanted to do), and we can split AK into two shorter days given the heat. But, it still means spending all that money and travel time, to miss one of their favorite parks, and my fear is the overflow into MK. September was already turning out to be busier than normal because of people trying to get in before SWGE, and the sales. Touring Plans had already increased general crowd levels from the historical 1s and 2s, to 3-5s since I booked. So, how much more is SWGE going to drive up crowds at MK, which would be our other main park?

Honestly, I just want to cry. This is all so stressful, because I have a huge factor most don't - special needs, and a very tight budget. I've seen so many other people on other groups say, "Oh well we'll just go and get done what we can get done. No matter!" "Can't let crowds ruin a trip, it's all in your state of mind."

Except crowds can ruin our trip, because they'll send my daughter's anxiety through the roof. And DAS, while very helpful, also has limitations when it's really busy/waits are really long. This was going to be our last trip for at least 4-5 years, possibly more. It's not like we can just pop back next year for another trip like many on the boards. We only have 3 day base passes (plus the party), so it's not like someone else that has 7 day tickets with more time, or the flexibility of hoppers and can just hop somewhere else when it gets too crowded. And I just can't justify spending $2-3K of our tight budget (or FIL's for that matter) on a trip that is going to be spent mostly dealing with Hades temperatures, heavy crowds and lots of lines.

So, what should I do? I basically only have 6 days to decide, because if we're rebooking for this summer, the sale for the flights ends on the 14th.

Hi I only have one daughter with special needs who can't handle the crowds, noise of a busy time. We always went on an off time for this very reason. We have also always been on a budget since I am a stay at home mom. I do understand your feeling to a point. If this were me with your choice I would cancel and move it to between May and August. I agree the DAS pass is not going to help you with the kind of crowds that will be in the parks.

This way you know by then it will be a little less crowded and more organized. Yes it will be hotter but hey some pool time works. You will be able to do HS at that time. I would not go on a trip where my family or I have to skip our favorite park. I just can't justify that. It will be very hard while you are there to communicate to your children that they can't go. I know my daughter and that would not be good.

I am staying off site for an Orlando theme park trip this year due to finances. At first I was upset about it but I started looking at the benefits of the condo and I think it will be okay.

I hope your choice works out for you! :goodvibes

You won’t avoid crowds no matter when you go. SWGE will absolutely bring a crowd level never seen in DHS before.

I’d recommend going before SWGE opens. The heat will be the same as your September plans. It will still be very crowded. Other guests may have rescheduled their trips to avoid SWGE too.

Not sure how you usually do parks, but I’d say go for rope drop, take a midday break and go back after dinner. It’s cooler when the sun goes down, and if you can stay in the parks until closing, the lines do get shorter.

The most important thing about your trip is spending time together as a family. Enjoy your vacation!

We are booked 14th-22nd and because we have a group of 8 we are keeping it. It’s too hard to change and we booked with DVC points so I can’t change. If August was cheaper I would say switch to then. I’m afraid January and February will still be really busy so your crowds might be better in august. This situation sucks for all us planners that “knew” september was safe.

I think you should move your trip up. It will be a lot quieter now that people know the opening date and will be flocking there then. It will be hot in the summer, but I think the crowds will be minimal. Summer has typically become a slower time with the winter becoming more popular. I don't think the crowds will die down for some time after the land opens.

I would rebook and move it up.

There are four MNSSHP dates before the 29th (August 16/20/23/27) if you decide to still include this

I think you are the one that must decide this. I would either wait to go for as long as you can ( look at Disney website and normal when hotel are cheapest crowds are lowest ) or you can go as planed. I have a lot of problems with crowds people touching me nose problems with certain smell ( ok you get it) but I have done opening day for panda and TSL and I did New Year’s Eve at the MK. no I did not do a lot of rides I did people watch a lot sat on the ground with something over my head playing a game on my phone But you will need to over the pluse and minus for keeping and postponing your trip

I went to WDW for Labor Day week last year. The parks were not empty. They were still crowded. You will deal with it no matter what time of year.

In your situation I would move the trip up to before GE opens. I would check out VRBO for a reasonably priced rental. Then I would check on rental car rates.

You can still do MNSSHP if you go in August.

Honestly, September was never going to be cooler than August. Just back it right before opening. I can't do the heat so our trip is going to happen in January.

The first week of May tends to have low crowds. It will still be hot, but maybe not quite as bad as August/September?

I think if you can somehow get there at the beginning of May this year you’ll be in a good position.

Question for Disney Veterans...will all parks be busier, or just HS. Considering nixing HS and doing water parks/MK, AK, EP only. We always do September and make reservations/plans a year out ... kids are back at school, cheaper prices (value time), low crowds. Like the OP, I’m really disappointed that SWGE will be opening earlier then expected and bringing in the masses.

I think moving your trip up would be best... also check out orbitz.com for on site room discounts for late summer they have availability and coupon codes will let you take another 10-15% off wdw sale rates... i think if you book on a mobile device app15 is still the best. September and august are gonna have pretty comparable weather and there are mnsshp then...

I think it will be I am adding days to my already booked trip to be there opening day I will be at HS on opening day then plan on doing other park the other days

Have you already purchased tickets? If not, when you go this summer you can buy the 4 park magic tickets which are much cheaper then the standard ones in place of the party tickets plus 3day passes.

What is it your kids love so much about HS? My kids would take more time in the MK hands down.

I would switch to May-August. September last year was unbearably hot. May is usually hot, but not unbearable. It is going to be busy no matter what, but Jan-Feb is getting increasingly busy and with SWGE just having opened all the rides, I think it will be crazy next year. Good luck with your decision.

We had purchased them through a room package, which we'll need to cancel. But we can buy the Canadian resident tickets until March 15th, which is a bit cheaper still than the 4 park magic.

The characters they can meet (especially Sorcerer Mickey), TSMM, and they really want to see TSL, we were hoping for the new Mickey/Minnie ride, they loved Fantasmic, Indiana Jones, Frozen Sing A Long, they wanted to do all the Star Wars stuff like Jedi Training, Star Tours, Launch Bay, watch the march etc...

Honestly, while yes, my kids like rides, that's the least of what Disney is to them. We can get rides that are basically the exact same with far less wait, and one heck of a lot cheaper, close to home. We don't do Disney for the rides. For them, it's all about the characters, the shows, fire works, parades, experiences etc...

Then it sounds like you need to visit DHS when you go. I just wouldn't do it weeks after SWL opens. I think I heard at some point that SWL will exit into TSL? If they really want to do TSL, I wouldn't go anywhere near there just after 8/29. I would definitely move the trip. Maybe pass on this year entirely and just do the rides you can do closer to home to tide them over.

Have you purchased the MHSSHP tickets?

Yes, my MIL did. However, I called Disney this morning and they said that while the tickets are non-refundable (as in we can't get our money back), what they will do, is cancel the tickets and then let us use the credit to purchase another experience - ticketed or dining. So, while I need to talk to SIL, I think what we'll do is book an off site (values are sold out for the dates we are looking at) stay in May. We'll buy 4 day passes do 2 days at MK, then HS and AK. And we'll use the credit from MNSSHP to book the HEA Garden Plaza dessert party. And hey, I guess on the plus side, instead of our trip being like 185 days away, now it's only 60 days away lol.
