Should we rent a car? First time WDW visit

I just purchased the Birbaum WDW Travel Book. In it states that the WDW Transportation System is good but count it taking a long time getting around. It said 45 plus minutes and can be 90 minutes during the busy season (Holidays, when school is out, etc.) Think about it when you have dinner reservations or other special plans. My husband insists on a rental car wherever we go. I really considered not getting one our next trip, April 2014, but the more I think about it, the more I think we should get one.
