Should this kid have been promoted to 9th grade with these grades?

Here is the 8th grade report card for both semesters:

English C- C-
Math D D
History D C-
Science B- D
Phys Ed A A

What do you think? Should this kid have been allowed to go into the 9th grade?

I'm confused.

Though those grades suck, they're PASSING grades. Your school system decides what actual number grades a student has to have to pass a class and those grades pass every class.

So, though it's not looking very promising to an invitation to mensa, the student should be promoted to the next grade.

I'm assuming a "D" is a passing grade, so technically, yes. However, I don't feel that anyone is doing this child a favor by letting him/her barely pass and being pushed along to the next year.

Not good, but I thought if there is no F's then he/she would move on.

But the bigger questions may be what is going on that this student can not maintain a C average. If this person is showing up in class and doing all assigned homework they should be at lease maintaining the C average.

Well, it's a far cry from the honor roll for sure, but all his grades are passing so, yes, he should be promoted.

Our district does not issue D's - anything below a C is failing. He would not be so lucky if he lived here.

Yes, those are all passing grades.

I'm with the others...not exactly Honor Roll material BUT I don't see a single F on there.

As a matter of fact other than Math, got grades that were "average" or even "above average" at least 1/2 the time.

I guess my other question would be Are the grades from not turning in homework or not understanding the information? I know I happened to look at my Junior's grades and she wasn't doing so well in History but then I looked and hmm...she got 90% and above on all the tests, quizzes, etc... turns out she wasn't turning in the weekly current event assignment so those 0's dragged her grade down pretty far.

Dang, it's true: Don't mess with Texas, but I dig it. How long has that been in place, the there is no D go straight to F thing?

I don't get the question. Those are passing grades aren't they? So yes, he is elligible to move up.

McDonald's needs fry cooks too.

Those are my DH's grades from 8th grade! :rotfl2: We just found some of his old report cards and we are shocked at how bad he did.

Honestly, I never knew a D would be considered passing. I would not be pleased if my kids brought home those grades and I wouldn't want them to advance because my assumption would be they didn't learn the material.

DH went on to graduate college and has had a great career so those grades didn't seem to make a difference. I really want to find his report cards from high school but he says he doesn't think he did any better. He did great in college, though. Go figure.

Well as others have said - all the classes were passed.

Besides, retention hardly ever results in improvement.

Lisa ... you should ask your DH why he went from a B to D in science .... thats quite a jump... maybe you could "tutor him" teehee

Guess I'll be the lone dissenter for now... but no, I don't think they should have been promoted. Clearly they are not doing enough or understanding enough. And maybe I'm looking at it from a totally different perspective as a college student trying to earn my way into my major. With those grades, no matter how hard I want in, I'd never get into my major. Obviously if college thinks that I need to achieve a certain level of proficiency to get into my program (and will not move you on to the next class if you don't get at least a "C"), the same concept should apply to younger students wishing to graduate from high school.

It has been noted in many studies that high grades in HS and/or college have no correlation to success after school, in the working world. It is suspected that the reason is that those who have to struggle to pass learn better work ethics than those who have straight A's hit them in the head with no effort.

Yes, but I'd hope there was intervention.

Funny:goodvibes I had a D in high school typing, with actual typewriters, it was the 80's. but i wasn't confident of my work so I wouldn't turn it in. But I can kick butt typing now.

Those are all passing grades even if they are not good grades so the kid should be promoted. But if it was my kid, I would be asking why he couldn't hold up at least a C average.

Did he/she pass the state standardized testing? If so, that could be why they were passed on to 9th grade. That's how our district works. You could fail ALL your classes, but if you passed the state testing, you went on to the next grade. It think it's really stupid, but it's the way it is.

Could not agree more. One of my best friends in high school missed out on a lot of fun back then because she needed to study until 2 am every night to crack B+/A-'s. Now, she's a lot more successful than some of our other friends, because she learned how to work hard at an early age. Now, it's just what she does. She doesn't see it as "working hard." She's always put 110 in everything she does.
