should parents buy direct or resale?

We bought our second contract resale and it was so easy, and cheap! I saved so much and if you are lucky enough to find a contract with banked points you can rent them right away and further reduce your out of pocket expenses!

We bought our 2nd contract resale and it really did just under 5 weeks from offer to closing! It was very easy. We had an answer from DVC on the ROFR after 3 weeks closed at 4 1/2 points in my account soon after that! Resale is the way to go along with smaller contracts!

Looks like my parents won't be buying. Dad says he doesn't want to be tied to going to Florida every year. Wonders what he would do. Anyway, I think it would be great for them. Mum really wants a place for the winters. However, my husband says we will be picking up two hundred more points sometime soon. Now that I know about small contracts that's what we'll be looking for. I am disappointed to see how many 'stripped' contracts there are on the resale market. do I really want to buy something if I can't use it until 2013? Does it matter which resort we buy? We are at AK now.

Rumors abound that Disney is in the process of changing some of the rules for resales. There are multiple threads concerning this on other boards. Some of the possibilities:

1) $1000 fee to "register" new resale accounts

2) Restrict resale buyers to home resort only

3) No trades thru DCL, RCI, or ADB

4) Resales can book only at the 7 month window

There are more and by no means are these written in stone. Changes, if done, would take effect after the first of the year. Such being the case I would not recommend buying a resale until this is straightened out.

When I was talking to my guide last week we talked about this. She said that any of the above is possible at any time as other timeshares do this commonly. It makes buying from Disney directly seem more attractive, especially since I can get OKW for $90 per point with the 2057 expiry versus 2042 and no waiting or hassles.
